    Hi MS Gurus,

For some unknown reasons, I encounter said subject. To ease your understanding, please refer to attached 3 x jpg file for details.

I would appreciate it if you could kindly show me what I have missed and the settings I need to check in Windows 10 Professional Version 21H2 and OS build 19044.1620 to enable the search to show the MS Patches I need to select to install in my laptop.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Best regards,

    Eddie Loh

Press Search for Updates again and then view Installed Updates. You should see a list.

      These are my updates:

enable the search to show the MS Patches I need to select to install in my laptop.

Your WUmgr displays 15 updates. 1 for Defender and the others are drivers which you should hide in WUmgr and disable drivers updates using GPEdit on your Windows 10 Pro.
Firmware, BIOS and Drivers updates should be downloaded directly from the OEM not Windows Update.

Defender is updated regardless of pause/defer of updates.
      Check your Windows update settings.

You didn’t state what the latest updates installed were.

      Refer to https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000016-guide-for-windows-update-settings-for-windows-10/

      * There is incompatibility in the update list between WUmgr and Windows Update/uninstall updates.
Updates using WUmgr don’t always appear in uninstall Updates and updates using Windows Updates don’t always appear in WUmgr installed updates.
      You should check both.

      Hi MS Gurus,

Thanks for the prompt response to my SOS.

      @abbodi86
-> You are right. The MS Update is “Paused” for some unknown reason as seen in “Capture_6.jpg'” file. However, when I unPaused it, the MS Patches are pushed down automatically to this laptop and installed by themselves. I inherited this laptop from a staff who had left with no proper handover of duty.

How do I unPaused it with the safeguard that I can stop the MS Patches from auto-download to this laptop? To ease your understanding, attached please find 5 x jpg file for your perusal and more advice.

      Thank you.

      Best regards,

That is exactly what is expected if you unpause. An immediate download/install of everything pending in the WU queue.
You can stop this in several ways:
Set Metered Connections on your Internet before you unpause. Metered connections imply you are paying for bandwidth, and MS will not download. Be sure you turn off Metered Connections before you actually update.
Take the computer offline before you unpause and the download will fail, giving you time to set Metered Connections and use WUMgr to control the updates.

If you use WUMgr you should not use Pause. WUMgr and Windows Update both use the Windows Update Service to scan for updates. When you use Pause you not only stop WU, you stop WUMgr from scanning, identifying updates and controlling updating. Using WUMgr, you should not even have to deal with Windows Updates in Settings.

      Hi MS Gurus:

Sorry I forgot to mentioned that I had done an image full backup on the C drive before I “unPaused” the MS Update, As a result, I’m able to reimagine the C drive back to the “Pause” state for the MS Update.

Thank you in advance for the sound advice and assistance rendered.

AKB2000016 and AKB2000013 (use @Matador ‘s method described part way down the thread) will give you some insight into the workings of Windows Update.

If updates install without error and the system runs without error, leave the updates in place.

With Windows 10 Pro you don’t need pause.
All you need it to set GPEdit ‘notify don’t download/install’ = 2.
You will be notified of new updates and you decide when to install.

Parts of this thread are confusing.  If the OP is using WUMgr then why would you do this?

The OP used pause so he ddin’t get any updates with WUmgr.

Wumgr doesn’t stand on its own. WUmgr uses Windows Update and conforms to any Windows Update settings (pause, defer, metered, notify, drivers updates, TRV..).
There are no pause, notify… settings in WUmgr, so you can’t select when to download/install updates with WUmgr.

Notify=2 let you know that there are new updates, then you can use WUmgr (when you are ready to install) and hide updates you don’t want and download and install the ones you want.

You can always use wumgr to check for updates manually.

I have Windows auto update setting in wuwmgr set to disabled.

Whenever I want to see if update are available I press the check for updates button in wumgr.

Then I can select which updates to install or hide if I wish.

So what is the point of setting notify=2 in GPEdit configuring automatic updates?

        Mine is set to disabled.

Exactly my point Jeff.  Your settings are the same as mine.  Threads like this are very confusing. Since there are so many different options using WUmgr or WUshowhide, the complete setup should be explained. Otherwise, it’s meaningless.

@Eddieloh, the originator of this topic, could not get the WUmgr manual check for updates to work, so your statement…

You can always use wumgr to check for updates manually.

          …simply isn’t true!

As was pointed out by @alex5723, WUmgr is NOT a standalone program, it uses the existing Windows Update process (regardless of whether you have Windows Auto Update disabled in WUmgr or not.)

So, if Windows Updates is paused (which it was for @Eddieloh), then a “manual check for updates” in WUmgr will not work until the Windows Updates has been unpaused (which @Eddieloh did but then encountered the problem where Windows tried to “automatically” download and install all the pending updates.)

The suggestions to set notify=2 in GPEdit and others made in this thread were specifically meant to help @Eddieloh prevent that from happening when he “unpaused” Windows Updates so he could get WUmgr’s manual check to work.
