I just ran wushowhide and there were no updates available under “Hide Updates”. I am running Win 10 Pro v 1909. It is Wedneday, Oct 14. I thought  I would see some security updates but wushowhide showed nothing.

Am  I doing something wrong? Does wushowhide look at my advanced settings  for Windows Update”? I have Windows Update set to “Updates paused”.

wushowhide and Windows Update use the same Windows Update Service to scan for updates.

When Windows Update scans, the resulting list of pending/available updates is stored in a cache until the next time WU scans on its own. So the list in the cache is static = does not change between system scans.
wushowhide scans for updates when you click on it, so the list you see is current.

When you Pause updates, you are telling Microsoft not to show you updates for the length of time Windows Update (=Windows Update Service) is paused. Since wushowhide uses the same Windows Update Service to scan, it will also not see updates if Pause is set ON.

For more information see AKB2000016 Guide for Windows Update Settings for Win10.

So to hide a problematic security update I must Unpause updates. This will result in Windows Update searching for updates. Once that happens, I am now  unable to  stop the install of that problematic  update.

That does not  make a  lot  of  sense to  me or am I missing something?

In the link you provided it says “Restart the computer (not shutdown/bootup)”. How do you restart  without booting up?

      • #2304222

There are two options on the taskbar power button – Shut Down and Restart.
        Have you not seen them?
Shutdown turns off the computer and you have to press the power button to turn it back on.
Restart recycles the computer back to the login screen without turning the computer off.

I knew that. I was contused  by “(not shutdown/bootup)”.

      What about my prior question:

So to hide a problematic security update I must Unpause updates. This will result in Windows Update searching for updates. Once that happens, I am now unable to stop the install of that problematic update.

That does not make a lot of sense to me or am I missing something?

      Thanks for answering these questions.

        That’s the way Windows works.
But if you turn on Metered Connections before you Resume updates, it prevents the updates from downloading.
Then you can use wushowhide to scan and hide the updates.
Once you do, you need to Pause again before you turn Metered connections back on.

If you read AKB2000013 it will help you understand what’s going on.

It makes me glad to be running the Pro edition, as it almost seems like Home users are being punished for using that edition.

If only there was a Group Policy ‘2’ equivalent toggle in the WU screen, or something similar for Home users, it would make updating less of a chore.

Home is the Edition most Consumers have.
I don’t think MS wants them to have any control.
After all, MS needs Beta testers. 🙂

My first look at Updates this (very early) a.m. WU showed 10/13 at 6 am as Last Chk’d and Nothing showed on the WU page or wushowhide. An hour or so later they DID show in Settings/WU so that meant my 1st look today was B4 WU had checked today. Look at  your Last Checked date and Time….
