If updates are paused, there are no updates on the computer to be hidden using WUSHOWHIDE.DIAGCAB.  When pause is released the flood gates are open and here comes everything with no way I know to stop the updates at that point.

With reference to Susan’s caution on KB5012170 and KB5021233, how do you proceed to stop the installation of those updates?

wushowhide and Windows Update both use the Windows Update Service to scan for updates. If you Pause updates in Windows Update, you Pause the Windows Update Service. So you also Pause the wushowhide scan.

AKB2000016 will explain the Windows Update settings. There is separate information for Win10 Home and Pro Editions.

You can WUMgr, a third-party Windows Update app to control updates. There is a guide here. Use the Seatch function to find many more threads on the subject.

And here is the way to Cheat Pause.

When pause is released the flood gates are open and here comes everything with no way I know to stop the updates at that point.

See my How to unpause Windows updates “without” using the Resume updates button topic on how to release the pause without having all the pending updates getting immediately downloaded & installed.

Thing is, if you release the update pause using the method described there, any “pending” updates won’t show up again until Windows Update actually performs its next “Check for updates“, so you won’t be able to “hide” them using wushowhide.diagcab until they’re ready to be downloaded/installed again (it’s a “Catch 22” sorta thing.)

What you’ll need to do is release the update pause using one of the methods from that topic and then use the WUMgr program PKCano referred to manually check for updates and “hide” any unwanted ones.

If you have Home Edition, be sure you set Metered Connections on your Network connection BEFORE you start so you don’t get bombarded by updates when WU searches again.
