After my question about wushowhide and my mentioning that I’ve been using it for years… this morning I discovered that it didn’t work! I even double-checked: the cumulative update and friends are all “hidden” but still windows update listed them as ready-to-download. Any idea what went wrong [and how I can fix it?]

      Nothing went wrong.

When Windows Update scans for updates, the results are put in a cache. That’s what you see in the Settings App\Windows Update. The cache doesn’t get refreshed until Windows Update scans for updates again on its own (maybe once a day or longer).

wushowhide is current. What you see in wushowhide is the current list of updates b/c wushowhide’s scan is done when you scan. After you hide updates, rerun wushowhide to verify that only the updates you want are available.

However, what you see in the Settings App\Windows Update list is what gets downloaded/installed. So, after you run wushowhide and hide updates, you have to clear the Windows Update cache (list) and force Windows Update to make a current scan so that the list reflects what you hid with wushowhide. There are several ways to do this.

You can wait till Windows Update again scans on its own – may be a day or so later.
      OR
You can force WU to scan by clicking “Pause,” waiting a few seconds, then clicking “Resume updates.” This will force WU to rescan. (I know, this is scary the first few times you do it. But if you have verified what is available in wushowhide, you are OK).

Download and run WuMgr and use it to check what is available (click the circular arrows). WU may not have updated recently and is still showing old data.

      cheers, Paul

I’m a scaredy-cat when it comes to Windows updates so I stick with the first option. 🙂

And whether it makes sense or not, or gives me false confidence, it also lets me know that my wushowhide and Windows’ own automatic scan are still working.

Being very ignorant of C# and Github where do you get an installer of WuMgm? Can’t see any mention of that in the links. My wife’s PC is trying to install W11 but she doesn’t have spare capacity to do it, not that she wants it! I found a quick method on the web which just turns off Win update. WuMgr sounds a more professional way of doing it.

Suggestion please, can WuMgr prevent Win 11 Install this way?

WUmgr is a portable app. No installation needed.
