The Microsoft Update Catalog lists a June 8 version of our old friend, KB 3150513, for Win 7, 8, 8.1, Win10 1511 and 1607. Looks like Jonathan Handle

I for one am going to treat this KB just like our old faithful re-occurring favorite and dump it in the trash dumpster.

Time to get out GWX CP again.  I have my copy running all the time.  Shields up!

      KB2976978 was just the beginning.

The GWX campaign was over last July and it’s not coming back. The GWXCP is useless at this point. The update KB2976978 is associated with telemetry/compatibility and KB3150513 is the definitions for it’s database, but MS is not going to force Windows 10 on your Windows 8.1 computer.

        You can uninstall GWXCP safely.

I’d be interested to know how you can be so certain that MS is not going to try to force upgrades again.

True, but they can easily start a different campaign. I can see it now:

After listening to feedback from our customers, we introduce the new “Security and Stability Campaign”. We will start rolling this out in the next 2 weeks to protect our customers – the updates will happen automatically so you can be assured your computer is protected.

              It’s OVER

In the zdnet article you reference above, the MS spokesperson is quoted as saying “There are no current plans to do other free upgrade offers at this time.”

That looks like 2 weasel words/phrases in one sentence and I interpret that to mean they might change their minds later.

Please supply the number of the people you know that have been affected by GWX forced upgrade since July 29, 2016 to back up your fears.

It isn’t really a question of whether it does any good to keep GWX CP installed and running in the background, it’s more a case of whether it does any harm to do so. I actually find it a very quick and intuitive way of accessing my WU settings to check they’re unchanged and I’m pretty sure it would still notify me if they had been unexpectedly changed.

If there’s a security weakness or other technical reason not to keep it installed then let’s by all means hear it, otherwise while I can see no obvious need to keep it installed I can also see no obvious reason not to do so.

      Woody,

Thank you for the compliment.  I consider it praise coming from you.

Please spell my last name “Handler” next time, I like saying the “r”.

      Very truly yours,

      Jonathan Handler

I have seven instances of KB 3150513 on my 1607 64 bit windows machine. The last updated 06/10/2017. On 06/11/2017 I started having Realtek HD Audio plugged and unplugged problems. Any other reports?
