I understand grandmother may not comprehend how to select updates to install or not, but that is what Automatic Updates was for.
Let the user decide, period.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 8, 2019 at 3:48 pm in reply to: The highest customer satisfaction in the history of Windows #339142I use W10 Pro at work and W7U at home.
W10 is much, and I do mean much, slower than W7.
Am I satisfied? Yes, with W7.
W10? Not so much.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 10, 2019 at 7:01 am in reply to: Microsoft Security Response Center: The biggest malware threat comes from zero-days; delayed patches, not so much #323447From an ecosystem perspective it is a terrible idea. It created a support nightmare for Microsoft. The vast majority of end users have neither the inclination, technical background, and discipline to examine individual updates each month. They may have had a technical friend or relative turn off automatic updating and have no clue that it is off much less how to turn it on. Even those who have the necessary background and inclination can easily miss prerequisite patches and superseded patches. With the vast Windows ecosystem imagine all the possibilities created by allowing individual patches to be applied or not.
And the other alternative; an OS that is secure and does not need constant patching, is quite the impossibility.
I would prefer to have the option, to apply some or all patches, as I do now with W7.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 28, 2019 at 3:09 pm in reply to: Woody’s Windows Watch: Windows 10 patching improves #317572The way to improve it (patching) is to allow users to choose when and what to patch.
That is the main reason I will never use W10 on any of my own machines.
Data mining (spying) is a close second.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 16, 2019 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Patch Lady – Windows 7 documentation is showing it’s age #312328Linux, of course.
Unless Microsoft decides to to become a decent, honest company, and cease spying on and data mining their customers, along with forcing users to deal with machine-crippling mandatory updates. Like that will ever happen…

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 7, 2019 at 3:52 pm in reply to: Windows 10 1809 adoption rate is slow. And that’s good! #244927I really do not understand why people continue to defend Microsoft and W10.
I can understand that Microsoft wants to end the best OS they ever produced, W7, because they are not making money off of it due it not having the data-mining capabilities of W10.
The sooner W7 goes away, the sooner I say farewell to Microsoft.
All my hardware purchasing decisions, going forward, are based purely on Linux compatibility, so what does Microsoft gain?

AskWoody LoungerA couple years ago, I made a fresh install, added all my applications, and then made a backup image that I saved on an external drive.
Now, when I want a clean start, I wipe my C: drive and reinstall the backup. Then I update everything and overwrite the backup image with a newer, updated version.
Saves hours of installing and updating.

AskWoody Lounger? says: …just habit, i suppose, simply flick the nic switch and get quiet and look at what has gone on since i last looked and avoids the lookie lou problems. my mse sends a full report anyway during the weekly quick scan. spynet demands to be enabled in order to have real time protection…
OK, but I wonder how that is better than simply making a firewall rule to prevent the app phoning home in the first place?

AskWoody Lounger? says: thank you, gborn! what about disconnecting from the internet when running CCleaner? after the monthly microsoft updates (when feasable) i stop the nic, bits, crypto, windows update, then run diskcleanup\DISM then ccleaner and finish off with PrivaZer…
Why not simply block it?

AskWoody LoungerI apply a ‘no phone home’ policy to every bit of software, including Windows.
If I need any software to connect to the Internet, I decide when it will, e.g. updating AV or Windows.

AskWoody LoungerI disabled the monitoring.
I also block all the ‘phone home’ of CC.
Easy.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 24, 2018 at 3:26 pm in reply to: Did you install the latest Meltdown/Spectre BIOS/UEFI firmware update? Joke’s on you #161883Hmm…
I updated my motherboard (Z170) BIOS from the manufacturer (eVGA), installed the Windows patch. The microcode revision update on my 6700K is C2. I have no issues, no noticeable slowdowns, nothing out of the ordinary, so what exactly is supposed to be the problem?
