I don’t remember why it wouldn’t install but it’s a known problem because they tell you, if it won’t install, to use the portable version.

Sorry for the delay. There are no settings to adjust. FastStone is really basic. So I have no idea how to disassociate it.

It has been a long and frustrating road, and I’m tired of fighting with Windows.

Somehow, epub files also got associated with FastStone Photo Resizer, and that took precedence so that when I clicked on an epub file, FastStone opened. When I uninstalled FastStone, I was offered SumatraPDF and finding something in the MS Store. That was OK, but I use the photo resizer, so I reinstalled it and was right back at epub files opening FastStone Photo Resizer rather than SumatraPDF. I can right-click on epub files and choose “open with” to get to Sumatra PDF, and for now I’m going to stick with that. I have to take the computer back to the shop for a hardware problem (thank goodness for warranties!), and I’ll ask them if they can fix this also.

This is the stuff I tried early on, and it didn’t work. See my reply to the next poster.

Please explain. How can an update to a browser screw up file associations? I have Edge, but I never use it I haven’t even set it up. My preferred browser is Firefox.

I, too, have the portable version. But *how* do I associate the .exe file when Windows won’t show it to me in the file types?

    • in reply to: Windows update messed up default apps #2573053

Yeah, this would work but it turns out that I have the portable version because I couldn’t get the installer to work. Thanks anyway.

Turns out this is useless, because I couldn’t get the current version of SumatraPDF to install and I had to use the portable version. So it’s not an installed app.. Your suggestion was how I used to do it. Thanks anyway.

    • Putting a shortcut into my user start menu folder worked. Thank you.

Now that I’ve done that, it seems very familiar, like I used that trick way back when, when many, many programs were stand-alones or didn’t use installers.

    • in reply to: How to make a portable app show up on the start menu? #2561605

I did that, twice, restarting the computer between tries, and it didn’t work. It’s nowhere on the start menu. Now what? I’m open to using a different epub reader, but don’t know of any others.

    • It does. Thank you!

    • Dumb me! Yes, the file is 448, 944, 844 bytes, so megabytes, not gigabytes.

I have a free Google Drive, but I don’t think it’ll hold that much. I have no idea how big my MS One drive is because I’ve never used it. My ISP account limits how much I can mail to less than 5M, so that’s out. I do have have GMail, but have no idea how big a file I can mail.

I will see if I can simply copy the file to a CD. If so, problem solved! Thank you so much for catching my error.

    • in reply to: How to stop Explorer sorting by date #2557862

Less than a month ago, with help from you folks, I successfully made my Win10 computer stop grouping my files by date. Today, in a “fixed” folder, the files are suddenly grouped by date again. How could this happen and how do I permanently stop it from happening again?

      TIA

[moderator edit] please keep these in the same thread.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Real life interfered. I’ve downloaded this and will give it a try.

      Thank you.

Facetiously: Why does MS repeatedly ruin things by  removing capabilities and/or “upgrading” perfectly usable tweaks we’ve used for years?

That makes no sense to me!

Next question: this used to be a global fix. Do it once, and all folders from then on no longer grouped by date. That’s not true any more. Is there a global reset for this?
