Much the same as my experience except that, as I reported above, there were unexplained “crumbs” left behind in my case, and they disappeared “automatically” a couple of days after the initial deletion.

I’m sure it was, but for some reason it left behind the few “crumbs” mentioned in my original post. That’s what I wanted to get rid of, but which for some reason disappeared of their own accord after a couple of days.

      Thanks.

I’ll make a note of the instructions in that URL so that, in case of a similar problem in the future, I can refer to it.

Thank you both for your suggestions.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I didn’t get a chance to try either of them.

When I booted the laptop this morning I checked, and the remnants of windows.old had magically (mysteriously?) disappeared.  I don’t have any idea how or why, but I guess the main thing is that they’re gone.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to reply to my inquiry.

      * Update *

I’ve been corresponding with the developer, and he’s finally found what the problem is, and will fix it ASAP.

    • Thanks Woody; all clear now.

I’m sure I won’t live that long, but at least I’m covered for the rest of my life. Don’t have to rely on my ageing memory to remember to pay an annual subscription. 🙂

    • Thanks Kirsty; all good.

    • Hi Kirsty,

I’m not sure if you’re the person I should be asking, but here goes.

Using the link you provided, I checked my subscription information and now I’m confused. It shows:

Next Payment Date January 9, 2020
      End Date July 28, 2211

Why the next payment date on January 9, 2020, when the End Date is in 2211?

Is it due to the fact that I have/had a lifetime subscription to Windows Secrets?

One more question – because I have an active subscription, does that mean I’m an AskWoody Plus member, or does Plus membership require separate annual payment?

Two machines, both Windows 7 SP1 32-bit – Installed all available updates – .NET, Cumulative rollup, and Internet Explorer – no problems experienced.

I did them one-by-one – .NET first then reboot, Cumulative rollup second then reboot, and finally Internet Explorer then reboot.

Thank you to all the helpers here for their advice, comments, etc. Always very much appreciated.

Was there an error? Do you see this KB4099989 in the installed updates list?

      No error.

KB4099989 not showing in the updates list.

I wanted to say “thank you”, but even though I’m logged in I can’t find the appropriate button, so:

      Thank you.

Your well thought out comments are, in my opinion, very useful.

    • in reply to: What happened to Windows Secrets? #176320

I’m receiving the newsletters OK, so why not follow Paul’s suggestion and email them.

Although there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a meaningful response; I’ve emailed a couple of times and only ever get a pro forma response.

Also, the links in the newsletter, to the article(s) on the web, site are broken, so all you’ll get is a “whoops” message – “Error 404 – Page Not Found”.

      * Follow up to my last post *

Sorry, my excitement was a little premature.

Although there’s been some progress, there are still plenty of bugs in the system.

      1. The link in the newsletter, to the web version, brings up the newsletter for 6 February 2018 instead of the 6 March 2018 edition.

      2. The link in the “first page” of the newsletter web version, to “Show all articles on a single page”, is broken; that is, it doesn’t work.
I’m only able to get the four articles one-by-one, not all on the one page.
