I always plug in my iPhone 11 when doing updates no matter how much battery is left. Actually just upgraded to iOS 16.3 today without any issues. But never had issues updating my MBA before.

Yes my LMC 21.1 is very quick on updates!

As it gets close to 2 weeks since the release of Monterey 12.6.3, I went ahead and installed the update to my MBA.  It took only 40 minutes from download until being presented with the login screen. Will keep an eye on things and will report back if anything should show up.

There were 2 things that popped up this month that I’ve never seen before. The first one was a message, something to the effect, plug in to power. Even though I had 50% battery remaining on my laptop. The second was a document similar to a EULA. Never seen that before. Nothing earth shattering but thought I would report it.

Just a quick note about my grub menu. Apparently it changed back to “Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon” from “Ubuntu”. No changes made by me. It just happened automagically!

    • in reply to: Linux Mint Authentication #2525154

After spending a week viewing YouTube videos, reading threads on Linux Mint forums I followed Ascaris advice and booted in to the Live USB and ran Timeshift to restore the latest snapshot.  It took about 10 minutes to recover from the snapshot. Although it seemed to do it twice for some reason but the first time might have been a “test”.

After logging into LM after the restore I tested by running Update Manager and installed the latest version of FF. I was also able to run Quicken via wine but I don’t think that was an issue. I also ran the “groups” command and I was pleased to see sudo, adm and a few other groups displayed! I was back in business!

One issue I did notice when rebooting was the Grub menu. It now displays “Ubuntu” rather than “Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon “!! I know that LM is based on Ubuntu but why would it be changed like that? Not that it bothers me but it seemed odd to me.

      Thank you Ascaris for everything!

Its asking me for the root password. Since I have installed LM I’ve used my user and root password as the same.

The error message I am getting is:
“Your authentication attempt was unsuccessful. Please try again”

When doing sudo timeshift I get the following message
Sorry, user <username> is not allowed to execute ‘/usr/bin/timeshift’ as root

No I did not touch sudoers. But I think my problem is with the groups I belong to. When I issue the command “groups” it only gives me my username and family (the group I tried above for sharing files). Nothing else. I think I need to be in the admin and sudo group?

My current setup is a dual boot between Linux Mint and Windows 7.  Will I be able to use Timeshift from my Linux Mint USB Boot drive even though I have Windows 7? Will it know which partition to install it to. Will it require an administrator password to install? Is there any other way to get my group permissions back?  I really messed up.

      Thanks in advance.

SUCCESS! I am happy to report I have successfully installed Wine on my LMC 21.1.  I basically followed the steps here from DrBonzo

      https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

It went quite easily without any issues or error messages. After it installed I tested by downloading notepad++. I just right clicked and select open with Wine and it just worked. Then I tried to install Quicken 2000 and it installed without issues.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and advice.

Reading about the successes from Microfix and Elrod, I jumped on the bandwagon and upgraded from LMC21 to LMC21.1. It was a painless processes as all that I needed to do was open Update Manager and under edit selected Install LM 21.1.  As it was my first upgrade in LM I was a bit anxious in the beginning. But it took about 15 minutes to download then install LMC21.1

The one thing that I needed to change after rebooting my laptop was the mouse cursor. It just looked to awkward. But it was a simple change to get it back to the older mouse cursor!

I just wanted to say thank you for all the tips regarding Update Manager and LM updates.  Today I was able to update FF to 108.0.2 via Update Manager. I didn’t select a local mirror and it finished in under 1 minute.

I am taking my time learning about LM and now I hope I can get back to trying to install Wine!

Yes I use Timeshift to create snapshots to an external drive.

Do I configure Timeshift through Update Manager? Or do I just manually create a snapshot? Should I create a snapshot to the hdd or external drive

    • in reply to: Linux Mint Update Manager #2515487

Yes it seems the FF download is slow. Maybe I can try a different mirror site?

I was worried when I did my update and nothing was happening for 5 minutes. When I did my first update of 138 updates it went very quick!

I am running FF 108.0.1 and the version updated to is 108.0.2.

How do I go about “ignoring” 108.0.2? I remember hiding updates in Windows 7. Is there something similar in LM?

    • in reply to: Linux Mint Update Manager #2515408

Thanks Microfix.  I let’em rip for 7 updates.  But it got “stuck” downloading FF !I looked at the details and it was only at 10% of downloading FF.  So I canceled it and installed the rest.  It got a little tense as about 1/2 way through the update it paused for a good 5 minutes.  Eventually it finished.  I rebooted (as there was a Kernel Update) and everything seems okay.  I’ll leave the FF update for another day since I know what I am dealing with! Thanks again!

    • in reply to: Wine for Linux Mint #2514500

So I still haven’t installed wine on my LM 21. I am getting confused about whether to install 32 bit wine or 64 bit wine. I am assuming that Quicken 2000 is 32 bit (maybe even 16 bit?) So does that mean I need 32 bit wine? Or can I just install 64 bit wine and set WINEARCH=wine32 then run wine to run 32 bit windows app?

Thanks to all for your insights. I’m a little slow on implementing.

Yep, I formatted my USB flash drive as EXT4 and ran a Snapshot. Unfortunately it was as slow as molasses. It took like 15 minutes to do 15,000 files! So I remembered I had an external SSD that was gathering dust.  I formatted it as EXT4 and reran the Snapshot and it finished over 300,000 files in about 15 minutes! The SSD is 250GB in size so should have lots of room for Snapshots and user backups.

      Happy New Years everyone!
