I’m thinking that the Wordpad/Notepad solution is working. It isn’t part of the Lounge, but I can’t imagine a way to log in at the level of the right comment and staying there. I’m just happy staying on the same page… there’s a logic to logging in and staying on the same page. I know how I got there, and I can scroll back. I can manage the rest…

Someone had brought up pages for the threads… If there were pages, it would mean less long distance scrolling! That might be way easier to implement…

I could use Notepad that way! I don’t think I have Wordpad. That might be a good solution to not getting lost! With the increased volume of comments, it was becoming an issue more often. I can cut and paste efficiently. Thank you, trying it right away…

I can right click on a link and get a menu that lets me open it in a new tab. Not techy, so don’t know if that happens for everyone, or just my browser, or some setting somewhere. Maybe work for you?

Yes, refreshing the page shows me logged in, and even though I didn’t look logged in, I was able to comment as myself without refreshing…

But, without refreshing, the page showed me no edit button (as if I was anonymous), so that is why I posted separately about the edit 2 test.

Interesting mix of logged in and not.

I hope Woody can see that logging in keeps me in place. Whoops, I can see that just in logging in I go to the top of the page and lose my place in the comments…

Just a learning curve, I guess.

Edit 2- (the edit button disappeared fast on the above post) Then, when I log in, I do it at the top of the page. The back button takes me to the top of the page. I can simply scroll down on a topic with few replies like this one, but on a topic with many replies it is time consuming and difficult to find the post I wanted to comment on.

So, in testing this, when I use the back arrow, it doesn’t load as me having logged in… doesn’t say Elly…

Edit 1- So it doesn’t look like I’m logged in, but it did post my comment appropriately.

A random idea for better access…

I subscribe to topics, and comments are sent to my e-mail. I’ll check my e-mail, but not otherwise be on-line. I read the comments and then, if further interested, will click on the link on the bottom. That brings me to the topic and comment in Woody’s Lounge just perfectly. But if I want to log-in to comment, rather than do it anonymously, I am suddenly taken to a totally different page (Forums). I don’t want my password “remembered”, which might allow me to be logged in when I click the link. I want a dumb browser that remembers and keeps nothing.

It would be nice to stay on the page I am logging in on, rather than bounce somewhere else.

I don’t know how other people access a site like this, and how their navigating works for them. It was totally disconcerting for me, to be tossed somewhere else just because I logged in. I’ve already deleted the e-mail and link that got me here, so I have to dig it up, just so I can figure out where I was when I wanted to comment… I’m sort of used to it now, and delete e-mails slower, but it was a way to get lost. Even though the Forums let me navigate through them, I wasn’t paying attention to what Forum and Topic I was in, so I don’t know where to navigate to… and as the volume of fora and topics and comments grows it is only getting worse.

      Not the only non-techy here… 🙂

but only sometimes lost, disoriented, confused… Now where was that topic, “Totally Confused” that helped me clarify what my problem was and know I wasn’t alone?

When I want to simplify back to the “old” ways I just click the “Home” button (near top left) and scroll down what Woody has posted. That Home button is on every page.

It very much feels like the old site… I can scroll down and open the new posts that interest me. Just so I don’t get lost (oh, I’ve gotten lost some), I tend to right click and open a post in a new tab.

Then, if I want to see what everyone else says, I click on Comment on the AskWoody Lounge. That took me a little while to figure out, because I thought it was only if I wanted to comment. Instead, it opens up all the comments to that post, and I can read through them as I want. I find that works for me better than the Forum that opens up when I sign in. It has the same content as if I navigate to the Forums page, then click on the AskWoody Blog.

Yeah! My first chance to check, and the subscribe buttons are working for me again. Thank you.

Regarding Phase III, and realizing there are certain people with such valuable knowledge and willingness to contribute, but not knowing the technical aspects… is there any way to follow particular contributors? I’ve been subscribing to topics of interest, and certain forums. At one point in developing the Lounge, it was mentioned that it might be valuable, although take commitment and extra work, for certain well known MVPs to start their own forum/blogs that could be subscribed to? I always follow the AskWoody blog… and tried to keep up with everything else, but see a need to be more discriminating with my time as the Lounge growth explodes. I do check profiles and the replies of contribitors I find especially valuable, but it feels a little clunky when doing that. I have to find a reply by that contributor before I can navigate to their replies. Not sure that it would be possible, only that it would be nice… Thank you, Elly

Was just thinking I wanted to use an upvote on a post!

Looking forward to all the new Phase II offerings. Finding the amount of ever expanding posts a little overwhelming… but never boring.

The posts continue to be informative, and entertaining, even where the emotions get stirred up and Woody has to jump in and remind us of civility.

There is so much to learn a lot from the contributors here. The Lounge easy for me to navigate… Recent Topics and Search is working great!

Was puzzled through some of the changes, but the end results are great… Thank you, Woody!

Are you saying that the donations to AskWoody (through Patreon, PayPal, and the Amazon shopping link) are funding the ability to make all those Phase II changes? I’m in to helping making good things even better!

    • @Ch100- regarding “Elly, actually if you have never identified yourself with a Microsoft account previously, you have nothing to delete as you are anonymous.”

Microsoft does say each computer is assigned a unique ID… does it matter if it is my name and street address, or computer and IP address, it identifies me. It is being made no longer anonymous or optional. If the “unique ID” were optional… maybe it would be possible to be anonymous. It makes no sense to have to create a Microsoft ID to log in (give more information) to delete or correct information that should never have left my house in the first place.

    • I never knew Cortana was associated with patches to Win 7 & 8.1!?
Where does Win 10 come into patches for 7 & 8.1?

Back in 2015, when many people were considering taking the free (mostly optional, if you knew how to avoid it) Win 10 upgrade, Microsoft was saying “Customers can always turn Cortana off, putting the customer in control of Cortana.”
(see info they released to http://www.computerworld.com/article/2956773/emerging-technology/microsoft-responds-to-windows-10-privacy-policy-concerns.html)

But now, Cortana is extremely difficult to “turn off”, and data collection and transfer happens whether you want it to or not. Opting out means not a simple button to turn off, but tech knowledge, and firewalls. Many people who “upgraded” feel misled and betrayed. Some were involuntarily “upgraded”. So people are suspicious of any updates that may subject them to more abuse.

Snooping patches KB 2952664 (for Win7), KB 2976978 (Win 8.1) were associated with the GWX campaign, but it also seems they are useful for back porting the (hated) Win 10 telemetry into Win 7 and 8. There are other snooping patches. All of them seem to be designed to move Win 7 and 8 to collecting and transfering data, just like Win 10 does…

    • If you don’t service the car according to the manufacturer’s specifications, are you still covered by warranty?

Maybe that’s my problem… same car, these last 20 years. Can hardly remember it being under a warranty.

Works great, great gas mileage, and don’t have to worry that the grandkids might mess it up.

Yep, I take care of the maintenance and repairs.

So glad the manufacturers aren’t allowed to run around adding or taking away things to the cars they’ve sold so that customers are so frustrated they will buy new ones, or track my driving habits, or that they don’t decide I can’t run it any more and disable it…

…and I don’t want the high tech that invades the privacy in new vehicles, either…

I really think that there will be viable small business models that will disable the telemetry that manufacturers are adding to cars, computing, and smart appliances… an updating of the local handyman that will specialize in configuring your devices, appliances, autos, and home security so that they don’t violate your privacy.
