Lots of good reasons for home users to stay on Win 7. It can be configured not to call home, and it works well and does what I want it to do, and isn’t changing up on me all the time. I need all of those things.

Friends and family who went with Win 10 feel violated at the lack of privacy controls, are constantly interrupted, have to check all their settings and reconfigure with each update, and have all sorts of problems getting it to work the way it should…

      Hello Woody,
The link to IoT forum just brings me to this page at https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/the-dangers-of-home-smart-devices/, not to where you indicate it should be going. I want to be smart… not so much the devices…

    • Seems to me Win 7 allowed me to opt out of CEIP, and I did. That was all the telemetry, and I didn’t agree to it. That was then… now? Same operating system on the same computer… Microsoft is changing the rules after the fact, and doesn’t want to give me the option to disagree, but if I insist on disagreeing, sending info anyways? That is just wrong…

    • The FUD comes from deliberately misleading the microsoft customer base, making informed consent impossible. We can’t tell what or why they are doing (uncertainty). If what we can see and know is coercive and immoral, I can reasonably figure what I can’t see is worse… and that is scary (fear). Microsoft is clearly not acting in the best interests of me, the customer… and I doubt I will do any kind of business with them again.

    • Allowing people to delete info being collected is too little, too late.

Having to identify yourself with an account in order to review or delete? Completely unacceptable…

Yep… Microsoft is misbehaving on a grand scale, and just because all the other corporations and governments are doing it too, because they can, doesn’t make it right.

It is very easy to use, and finds just what I was looking for. So I like it, and use it.

      Hello Woody!
The video on this didn’t link in a usable way (not even a cut and paste)… Not a real link or video at this time?

    • in reply to: AskWoody Lounge Reply Rules #27136

Woody will probably add this later:

The software we use here (WordPress and bbPress) hook into a free Avatar service called Gravatar. Here’s how to put a mug on your posts.

      Step 1. Go to Gravatar.com

Step 2. Click the Create Your Own Gravatar button.

A registration form appears. Follow the instructions, using the email address that you used to sign up for the AskWoody Lounge. The username can only be lower case letters and numbers – no spaces – and it has to be unique (which is to say, it has to be different from every other Gravatar username).

      Step 3. Click Sign up.

You get a confirmation email from WordPress.com with a link to activate your username.

Step 4. In the email, click Activate Account.

You end up back in Gravatar.com, where you need to sign in and upload an image.

Step 5. Click the link to add a new Gravatar.

Instructions from there are pretty easy. When you come back to the Lounge and refresh the page, your new avatar should appear.

    • It isn’t over-analysing anything, even though I’m not a system administrator. It isn’t just interesting reading. Privacy is important to protect and worth the extra effort to maintain. I’m not messing up by choosing to be group B, but continuing to protect myself from Microsoft. That I shouldn’t have to, is true. But Microsoft is the one at fault and causing the problem. I understand how not following their protocols can cause problems. But they could solve that easily by providing working privacy settings (and any telemetry should be opt in). I would pay the extra money to have a system that is private and not being harvested for data. That is of value to me, as a customer. Microsoft clearly doesn’t want me as a customer, and has violated my trust in their products. That means I will not support or buy products that are solely for Windows in the future. I am going to protect my current computer for as long as possible, and I treasure Woody’s help. Ch100, you give wonderful, detailed information… but the reason I love Woody is that he informs me so I can make the best possible choices given my values and knowledge. Non-techy people can understand their choices… and do want to have a safe and reliable machine, even if it is their one and only. For me, right now, that means security only patches. If Woody didn’t lead me through the more technical aspects of obtaining them, I would be group W. Shame on Microsoft for making so difficult and shame on you for not respecting those of us who are not technically trained. I’m not trying to have privacy because I’m into illegal stuff. I believe in privacy as a human being. More of us need to be following group B… I’m encouraging my family and friends (with their computers backed up) to follow it too. If enough people did it, Microsoft might pay attention, instead of disregarding us as an unimportant minority. When I explain that the telemetry is in the updates… well, I haven’t found one person who wants it. Other than being in groups B or W, how can it be avoided? Clearly Microsoft Update Catalogue is for us, the non-techie people… unless you have another way to provide the essential privacy and security?

Non-techie, but wanting to maintain a safe and secure no telemetry Windows 7 machine. I learn a lot from this site (thank you Woody), and want to learn more… but I get lost in all of the discussions sometimes. Thank you for the concise summary.
