Well said. I may not be a tech person, but I have found Windows useful and entertaining… I did start back in the days before color monitors. But I am not stupid, and I am not about to blindly yield my privacy so I become something to be bought and sold by corporate interests. It continues to amaze me how Microsoft says it is listening to its customers, while it deftly ignores the needs and active protests of a large segment of its customers. It has the desirable system already (if you are a business). So it doesn’t require additional development. It takes work to try and move everyone towards a Windows X model. They must be terrified that there will be wholesale revolt as non-tech people figure out how they are being marketed… notice the ads on Windows X are not so bad… yet! They are cutting out the availability of retreat to their better (private) operating systems… I don’t think they like or respect us users very much. I just get angry… so I appreciate how well-put poohsticks summarized the situation. Microsoft really should give customers a viable, easily updated, option. It should not be this much work… for any of us.

    • There are real and important reasons to choose to be in Group B or W, and Nd60 paints the picture succinctly. Odd that we (the people buying a service) can’t get what we want and need. I’ve learned a lot, being someone who isn’t into computers for computers sake, but for what I can do with it… I’m grateful for Woody and everyone here, because as I follow the discussions and check out my computer, I’ve learned a lot. I’m willing to experiment more. I may just take my beloved Windows 7 off-line entirely, rather than risk its functionality. I do disk image back ups in addition to regular back ups. I keep three copies of anything, computer, local, and one I move off site. I have never had to restore from them. Maybe, down the line, I will come across a “test” machine to play the Microsoft game with… I’m finding it quite interesting to learn more about computing. More likely I will go with Linux and explore that because Microsoft has shown its colors. If it was a mistake it would have been corrected during the GWX campaign. It isn’t a mistake. It is what predators do to molify their victims so that they can continue to victimize them. I’m past not volunteering to be used, and am actively supporting friends and family to move away from Microsoft in any capacity. You have no idea how much I appreciate Woody’s expertise and willingness not to herd us into choosing one thing or another, but inform us of our choices and possible consequences… you have been invaluable in my quest for an operating system that provides me access to the resources of the internet without compromising my privacy and safety.

Was pleasantly surprised that Justin personally got back to me when I brought a problem I was having with the Bees game to his attention. I really appreciate his timely response, which was,

“Thank you for bringing this to my attention, now that im aware of this im going to fix it immediately and you should see an update within the next 48 hours (or less if apple will expedite the request).”

I’ve learned a lot from Woody, and really appreciate the knowledge and time he spends helping me keep my Windows 7 going. I love reading and learning from all the people that contribute… and if playing an enjoyable game helps, I’m more than happy to share it with friends and family. I’ll be group B for sure. What a difference between the responsiveness in this forum, and having the need for a non-telemetry ridden operating system being completely ignored by Microsoft.

    • I am not a tech-type person, but I don’t want Windows 10 or telemetry on my computer. I find that I have to hide updates I don’t want. I used to have it set to check and let me okay them, but removing the checkmark of unwanted updates was only temporary…they would recheck themselves (not sure why)… then install when my computer turned off and was restarted. After going through uninstalling them several times, I just set my machine to manually update. I wait a few days for the info to come in, chose what I want, and hide the rest. It is time consuming, but what I have to do. I’m still a little hesitant to jump to Mint, or another operating system, but I’m starting to think that might be less time consuming. I don’t suppose Microsoft will recognize that a group of people don’t want those things and provide an easy way to avoid them? Until then, I am utterly grateful to Woody providing clearly understandable information. Thank you, Woody.
