    • Hello, I just installed the security only April thru July patches for Windows 8.1 and IE. I also just installed the August .net Preview but no other August patches. When restarting I got the warning about Windows 8.1 ending support soon. I told it to remind me after support is no longer available for now.

Anyways, which of these patches did that come with? After support ends I plan on keeping it for a while and that will get annoying. I thought the end of support message only came with the cumulative quality roll ups.

      Thanks!

I understand Windows 8.1 POS is supported until July 2023. Any chance we may be able to use another 6 months of security patches? Maybe the same way that Windows XP got 5 extra years?

    • in reply to: Finding *Uncensored* Browser Searches #2433110

After years of using duck duck go I made the switch to brave after this announcement. I had already been using the brave browsers after some similar comments made by the Firefox ceo a while back. The brave search engine is in beta but I am seeing good results so far. Someone has to make a choice on whether or not to trust a result, source. I would prefer that to be the end user rather than someone else deciding for you. Presearch also looks promising as well. SearX, Mojeek, also are independent and seem good. I just don’t know much about the fully customizable part of it yet. There is also YaCy which is a peer to peer search engine. I haven’t tried it yet so I have no idea how that works. Most of the rest mentioned use bing for their results.

    • Thanks, I have the exact printer you do. I ended up uninstalling the entire Brother Utilities suite and reinstalling. What a pain. At first that didn’t work. It took over an hour to redo this. It ended up showing me 3 Brother Fax icons under printers and no Brother printer icons. I deleted all three fax icons and tried to reinstall the drivers again. It wouldn’t let me (didn’t even get to remove them) so I gave up for the day. This morning for some odd reason, the Brother printer icon just showed up and works. Very weird. I would try to get the fax icon back again as well, except I never used them so I will just leave well enough alone.

    • Good Morning. I currently have Windows 8.1. A few weeks ago I installed Jun thru Sep security only updates (Oct has not been installed yet) I am just getting back to this computer and my wife says the printer hasn’t worked for a while. I have a brother printer/scanner/copier/fax. I looked at the installed printers and the fax icon is still there but the printer icon itself is gone. I started going through some of the comments on here and see that there have been issues with some updates causing printer issues. It seems like this issue probably started around the time I installed the June thru Sept security only updates. Is one of these the culprit? If so do you know which one? Is there a fix for it (such as reinstalling printer drivers) or is the only option to uninstall it?

    • in reply to: Today’s the day – Flash EOL has arrived #2325395

I read somewhere that the time bomb for flash was not introduced in the last (December) update but in an undisclosed update sometime ago. I found this website where a poster says it was in the update after 32.0.0.371. Can anyone confirm that .371 will work after Jan 12 and that is indeed the last one without the time bomb. I would like to keep flash for the next six months or so when the next Firefox esr comes out and eliminates support which I think is July 2021. Finally, does anyone know of a good source of where I can go back to .371 without a virus. I had mine on auto update and am currently at the December update. Thanks. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=181703

Welcome Susan and good to see your first defcon article. One question: I didn’t see anything in your computer world article about Windows 8.1. Do you plan on writing about that version too as was done previously or was there just nothing to write about? I plan on keeping it until end of service and have relied on this site to keep it smooth. I saw a similar question below from a windows 7 user as well. Thanks!

Thanks Steve. At the time I was looking for the correct forum to put it in but didn’t think it really fit anywhere so I used the junk drawer. In hind sight I guess the code red forum would have been the right place.

In September, the first known patient to die as a result of malware, died in Germany because the computers at the closest hospital were down. She needed urgent care but had to be brought to a hospital 20 miles away. Doctors were not able to start treating her for an hour and she died. https://apnews.com/article/technology-hacking-europe-cf8f8eee1adcec69bcc864f2c4308c94

This has been going on for a while. I posted about it here: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/over-400-hospitals-hacked-in-the-us-this-weekend/

At the time this was the only mention on it by any of the news: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/cyberattack-hits-major-u-s-hospital-system-n1241254

Was a little surprised it received so little media attention and nothing on here until now. It is the largest attack in US history. Three of the four Hospitals in my area (Temecula, CA) were affected by it. They had to go back to full paper. I heard that they still haven’t fully recovered. This week the fourth hospital was down as well for this latest attack.

It’s Firefox 78.3.1 ESR. It was that version prior to the reinstall too and prior to the printer not working at all. Also when I originally said clean reinstall, I meant of Firefox only, not windows if that helps.

Apparently it’s something to do with Wikipedia is not a newspaper.

Sysadmins have undoubtedly seen this on one of the many computing news sites that have run stories about it. Wikipedia isn’t a newspaper. -MrOllie 20:23, 5 February 2020 (UTC) Enough of anons / socks re-adding this stuff, William M. Connolley  22:07, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

The good or bad thing about aerospace, it takes years to test and qualify new software to ensure it doesn’t cause spacecraft or aircraft to due funny things. Since this launched in Jan 2006, my guess is that they are using something like Windows XP (although Sun systems is used more on things like this), so its probably a lot more solid than Windows 10.

I read an article a while back about an air traffic control system that the only people who can fix the code are all in their 80’s (can’t seem to find it now). I did see that just recently, the US air traffic control just updated a 40 year old computer system.

I understand the Voyager probes (still operational and still exploring the edge of our solar system and interstellar space) use Fortran 5 and 77.  https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/news/voyager-mission-anniversary-computers-command-data-attitude-control/ I wonder who is able to still program that?

Interesting article! It wasn’t quite 8 hours from your post time, as closest approach was at 0833 est. I have been watching the progress of this since before it’s launch via their website: http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/

check it out if you get some time it has lots of articles on their progress and scientific discoveries as well as lots of photos of Jupiter, Pluto and asteroids.

Today will be busy as we are watching the Rose parade with my son and wife, then afterwards the annual winter classic (outdoor nhl hockey game) both traditions. This year is even better since my home team, the Boston Bruins are playing in it…. just hope it snows in Indiana today to make it a good traditional hockey game.

Somehow I will try to see the new horizons results.
