      Available updates:

      2020-07 cumulative update for windows 10 1909 (KB4565483)

security intelligence update for Defender Antivirus (KB2267602)

The security update has been available, but not sure how I would download one, but not the other. When you push the download button you get everything pending.

I followed PK’s instruction using gpedit to hold updates until I want them installed. Now that is time to install I have a couple of questions before I pull the trigger.

I’ve got some Intel drivers pending that I don’t want, so I used wushonhide to  hide them from installing, but they are still in the cue on download page. I have Win 10 Pro, do I follow 2000013: How to clear the Windows Update queue in Win10? I found a link on how to clear the cue if you are using Win 10 Pro, but it appears to be the same procedure.

Do Win 10 home and Win 10 pro use the same process to clear the update cue before installing the wanted updates?

I noticed during July that KB2267602 for Microsoft Defender is pending. Is there any concern not installing security update until we are given the green light to install?

      Thanks

Thanks for replying. I went and reread section 4. I prefer your strategy since you can see what’s coming and defer with wushonhide. I set feature deferral to 365 with no other settings enabled in gpedit. I changed the pause to end tomorrow and I won’t reenable for next month. I’ll keep checking windows update until I can see/install updates. Thanks for your help PKCano, greatly appreciated.

I experienced the caveat last month. I didn’t pay attention to when the pause would expire and when Woody said to install last month I went to remove the pause, but it had already expired and was downloading 2004. I tried it since it was there and I had issues with Outlook, so I uninstalled via recovery. I don’t want to go through that again. It happened on all four computers.

This morning I went to adjust update pause date to get June updates. The pause was on until 7/13/2020, but when I checked Windows Update there was no resume updates button and upon checking history none of the June updates have been installed. Instead I had a download button showing an update for Windows Defender (screenshot attached). So I went into advanced to change the pause date. It wouldn’t let me pick today, so I chose tomorrow.

My question: Is the download button (attached) I’m seeing gonna do the same as the check for updates button that we are told never to push?

I’m all in with your update advice. My intention was to click the resume button after looking through the mail, but it wasn’t there.

If the updates are no longer paused because the pause date has been reached won’t they install on their own eventually?

I didn’t get to click anything in Windows Update. On Saturday my task was to get the May updates installed after going through  email. When I went to Windows Update the updates were downloading. It said that it had checked for updates earlier and went ahead on its own with no input from me downloading the monthly updates along with 2004.

What happens when the paused date is reached? I didn’t keep track of the date last month, I  just pushed the pause button until I was in June. If for instance I was paused until 6/5 what happens with Windows Update on 6/6? I will be keeping track of the paused date from now on. Not sure if that allowed the download, but I want to be sure.

I went to push the resume updates button to install May updates. When I got there Windows Update reported that it had checked for updates earlier that morning and was already installing 2004. It was at 80%. The updates I wanted were also queued, but not installed yet.

I think that Windows Update reached the pause date and started downloading and installing updates. I now have the pause date on my calendar, so I can keep an eye on it next month.

Not sure what to do next. I paused Windows Update for a week to see if I can get this sorted out before more updates arrive on Tuesday. I didn’t get the May updates and if I resume 2004 will continue to install.

Do I go unpatched or take my chances with letting 2004 finish and see what happens?

I got luckier on my laptop. It installed the May updates and then failed trying to install 2004, so I restarted and it reverted back to pre 2004. I paused until 7/2.

Out of 4 pc’s three of them are updating to version 2004. I clicked the pause updates button 4 times last month to get me into June. This morning when I went to install updates they were already installing along with 2004. I was NOT given the opportunity to defer the update, it just started installing on its own because apparently the pause date I had set expired. There was no resume updates button, just the  status of the updates download progress. Not wanting this update I hit the pause for seven days to stop until I can figure out what to do next. I have not gotten the May updates that I need and I’m getting upgraded to version 2004 that I don’t want at this time.

Not sure what if anything I can do now to stop version 2004. Any suggestions?

I figured it out. The error was because I didn’t have the file properly mounted. Once I properly mounted the file the missing dll error went away and the install started.

      Thanks

For the initial backup I: turned on the computer, login, start the backup software and back to the NAS drive? (in this case you are backing up from the software installed on the running computer)

After not being able to access Windows anymore I: booted from the Rescue Media, start the backup software from the rescue media, connect to the NAS drive and recover the computer while it was not operating/online? (in this case you are backing up from the software on the media and the computer’s files are not active/online/live).

      Sorry for not understanding.

Since I was backing up over the network, I kept the laptop being backed up connected.

If you are asking about recovery I connected the USB HDD directly to laptop along with rescue USB flash drive and did the reinstall. I did not disable internet connection.

The NAS says it can handle multiple computers accessing it at the same time, but since I was kind of testing I backed them up one at a time.

I recently bought and installed Office 365 on 4 computers. I like the new office app and started using it right away. After the install on a Dell Precision laptop office app splash screen comes up with 4 dots going across. I tried to download from Microsoft store, but it tells me I already have it and cancels the install. So I attempted to uninstall office app in Windows 10 apps and features, but it said it was going to uninstall office. I tried office repair, but it didn’t work. Is there anything else to try before reinstalling office?
