Dell does not do anything special that I know of. You can read the Diskeeper theory of operation in the User’s Guide. I quote ‘It is not designed to make the disk look pretty – it is designed to inprove disk performance…”. So, I doubt that you can count on it moving the file in question.

BigAl, I’m curious about more details of your ‘view’ of Outlook. Are you upset because MS dosen’t put a format out that Palm accepts? Why didn’t Palm accept a format that MS outputs? I’m pretty sure that Outlook was around when the first Palm was released sarcasm. I’ve not had problems migrating data and settings from Office 95 -> 97 -> 2000 -> XP.

Bruce, That is a driver mis-behaving. You didn’t update any drivers? If not, do you have the most recent? The only XP related article that I could find is:

Bruce, Here’s a KB article that describes the functionality: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…;EN-US;q281660&[/url]. Basically, if you’re using XPH or XPP in a workgroup there is no advanced tab. The advanced tab is only available on XPP in a domain.

What versions of ZAP & Norton? I’ve had two instances of free ZoneAlarm 3.1… (oops forgot the last – it is whatever is latest) lock up my XPP machine. Doing nothing out of the ordinary and all of a sudden system will lock up (100% CPU utilitzation). The only way to recover is to re-boot – which is either much playing around or hit the panic (re-set) button. Still running ZA though.

Big Al, You may want to check out http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/utilities.shtml%5B/url%5D. These guys have plenty of free Windows 9x,NT,2K,XP utilities. They are extremely knowledgable about the various NT variants. Some of the utilities are not for the average user or faint of heart. But many are very useful. The NTFS driver also has a shareware version which allows read/write. There is also a very good resources page for anyone who really wants to get in deep.

You can not have XPH join a domain. You can certainly have a workgroup with more than one PC. Then, you can map network drives and access them that way. Whatever security, time synchronization, automatic scripts, etc. you may have setup in the domain will not be used.

    • in reply to: How do drivers start? #609981

I believe the drivers are started because of entries in HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServices. I’d be very careful about removing or changing entries as you could very easily end up with a system that will not boot.
If you use REGEDIT and navigate to:
HKUS-1-5-21-725345543-1078081533-682003330-500SOFTWAREMICROSOFTWINDOWS NTCURRENTVERSIONWindows does the ‘load’ entry in the right pane contain anything? If so, it may be the cause of the error.

BTW, if you uninstalled some third party driver/software it is probably not MS that is leaving things behind in the registry. Although MS is known to do that, many if not most third party uninstall routines do not cleanup the registry very well.

Bruce, I just noticed on a prior post that your picture of the drive properties has a ‘Recording’ tab. I thought that page would only be available if XP thought it was a recordable drive. Can’t you select the checkbox ‘Enable CD recording on this drive’ on the ‘recording’ tab?

Oops. That’s not real good. Look here http://www.jsiinc.com/subk/tip5000/rh5090.htm%5B/url%5D – another great site for help.

    • in reply to: Where’s the Autoplay Tab (XP Pro) #609715

Bruce, Yes to the uninstall. XP should automatically find it on a re-boot. If you get lucky it will re-build all the registry entries. I’m sure the property page is somewhere in the registry – probably one or more of those extremely cryptic clsid entries strewn throughout the registry.

      Good luck, Joe

    • in reply to: Where’s the Autoplay Tab (XP Pro) #609641

Bruce, Try using device manager to remove the drive and then have XP find it again. Sometimes that will fix things by recreating the proper registry entries.
Also, found this on Doug Knox’s site:
Autoplay tab Missing and CD’s Don’t Autoplay http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_autoplay_tab.htm%5B/url%5D

Sorry, no script file fix for this one. If you’re CD’s don’t autoplay and the Autoplay tab is missing from the Properties (right click the CD drive and select Properties), then click Start, Run and enter SERVICES.MSC Scroll down to Shell Hardware Detection and make sure this service is Started and set to Automatic.

Bruce, According to a thread in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.music newsgroup you can not delete the playlist only add to it. There is another thread which refers to this page: http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#offline%5B/url%5D. If you look at the registry files you may be able to trick WMP into thinking it is offline when started. That would keep it from automatically loading the page.

These folders are used to uninstall patches/hotifxes. If you apply a fix from Windows update or Windows download and your system start misbehaving these folders contain the files used to revert to before the fix. I’d second the opinion to leave them alone.
