Can you be a little more descriptive? What’s the error? How far does it get? is this the first install after the OS installation? Are you sure the user is a member of the local admininstrative account?

XP is very picky about memory. You might try taking a stick out and running for a while. If ok, then put it back in and see what happens. If not, take out a different one. You could also look for software to run memory tests. Also, if all devices all run after the OS install I’d upgrade the drivers one at a time and see what happens. You might be able to pinpoint a problem driver. Your problem seems more hardware or driver related not XP.

Yes. Right click ‘My Computer’. Select Properties. Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab. Click on the ‘Error reporting’ button in the lower right. Click the ‘Disable error reporting’ radio button. Then ‘OK’ your way out. That should do it.

    • Have you tried disabling the network connection immediately before hibernation? Then using it in standalone mode. And finally reenabling after re-connecting to the network & re-de-hibernating (whatever!!) for the last time. WinXP seems to be pretty good about disabling and reenabling network connections.

You have choices. You can go to: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html%5B/url%5D for the Sun version. You can go to:
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdo…572EB7A3865.exe%5B/url%5D for the MS version or you can wait for XP SP-1 (the java VM will be included).

It depends on how the folders are setup. Check out the compact command. Open a command window and enter compact /? for options. Or go to help and support and do a search on decompress.

      Good luck,

Melissa, Oops. Got this in the next newsletter I quoted last week.
GUI Chat Program for Windows LANs Follow Up

I had to get the asbestos suit out after last week’s newsletter! I reported on a cool tool called NTHail that allows you to chat with others on your network. When I first looked up the program, it was free, and I let all of you know it was free! The problem is the Web site decided to charge for the file AFTER the newsletter went out. Ouch! Mike Kanir was good enough to find another site that had the file. It’s FREE and all you have to provide is an email address and name (never give away your personal email address or name to a Web site). Get it here:
      http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=020806TI-NTHail

      Good luck – HTH

On a recovery CD the OEM can do pretty much whatever they want in regards to features not originally installed. The recovery CD is supposed to be an easy way to restore the PC to the state it was when it left the factory. You should always try to get a full product CD with a new PC. That is tough nowadays with the many OEMs. Anyway, as Dave said you need to investigate a third party backup solution. I’d recommend Drive Image also.

BigAl, I believe the default value is not zero based but the actual count. I’m not positive but my machine has ‘4’ and I have four servers in the list. And yes it only tries the one you have selected in the ‘Date and Time Properties’ applet. If you feel the need to automatically try more than one server you’ll need some other program. If you are trying to set up a time server on you own network there are several documents in the KB about configuring time servers. Be sure to look at the one for the OS on the machine you plan to use as the server. As you can tell MS ‘tweaks’ settings like crazy from one version of an OS to another. Here’s the one for XP:

BigAl, You’re welcome. On two XP Pro machines that I use the HKLMSoftware… key contains the list of time servers that populate the drop down list in the ‘Internet Time’ tab you see in the ‘Date and Time Properties’ applet. The value in the HKLMSystem… key is the one currently selected in the applet. I’ve always modified KHLMSystemCurrentControlSet… See Dave’s reply about control sets. I’m not sure about running the w32tm command. I’ve just stopped and started the Windows Time service. That seemed to do the trick.

Hey Melissa, I just got this in a newsletter to which I subscribe. GUI Chat Program for Windows LANs – Are you tired of public chat programs that allow Internet intruders to break into your private home LAN? All you want to do is send instant messages to other people on your home or small office network. If this sounds like you, check out a cool program called NTHail. NTHail is a free LAN chat program that allows you to send messages to other computers on your network. It’s easy to install, there’s no particular setup requirements and it’s FREE! To get a copy head on over to:
      http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=020730TI-NTHail%5B/url%5D.

I don’t know how good or bad this program is. Just remembered this thread when I read it.

Big Al, Take a look a this registry key on the XP machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeTimeProvidersNtpClient. The value in SpecialPollInterval is the time in seconds between time synchs. Also, look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionDateTimeServers. You can add time servers here. Be sure to change the ‘default’ value as it is the count of servers.

Mark, Yeah IE does do some flaky stuff sometimes. I found a program called Cache Sentry at http://www.mindspring.com/~dpoch/enigmatic/index.html%5B/url%5D that seems to have helped me. I’ve not had any wierd stuff since I started using it. There is some interesting reading about how IE handles the TIF.

Hi Howard, Try this KB article as a starting point: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;en-us;Q313896%5B/url%5D. Will lead you to others for troubleshooting DHCP problems. HTH & good luck.
