You should see this in context whith what I wrote earlier..
Can CoVID-19 be caught from a person who has no symptoms?
The main way the disease spreads is through respiratory droplets expelled by someone who is coughing. The risk of catching COVID-19 from someone with no symptoms at all is very low. However, many people with COVID-19 experience only mild symptoms. This is particularly true at the early stages of the disease. It is therefore possible to catch COVID-19 from someone who has, for example, just a mild cough and does not feel ill.  WHO is assessing ongoing research on the period of transmission of COVID-19 and will continue to share updated findings
Can someone spread the virus without being sick?
      • People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).
      • Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Its obvious government have to take in account they must not cause panic.
I believe governments should be totally open about the facts and communicate this, so people can make up their minds as to what measures to take. But it’s also a tight balance between “not harming the economy” and “ eliminating the risks of getting infected”

Be sensible…Corona spreads similarly like flu. (contaminated surfaces, cough, sneeze, aerosol, handshaking etc.) The biggest difference are the implications when getting the pneumomia. And end up in hosptital on a respirator for 3 or 4 weeks…that’s what we see here in many cases.
How Does the New Coronavirus Spread?
SARS-CoV-2, the virus, mainly spreads from person to person.
Most of the time, it spreads when a sick person coughs or sneezes. They can spray droplets as far as 6 feet away. If you breathe them in or swallow them, the virus can get into your body. Some people who have the virus don’t have symptoms, but they can still spread the virus
As to Ab Osterhaus..I dont have his telephone number…could give you the links on the broadcasts he was in…but that’s in Dutch…so you’d have to translate…

Minimize the risks of getting infected. Stay save.

      Hi Paul,
You should also see this numbers in context when measures like “social distancing and quarantines” are beginning to take place.
People with lots of symptoms, spread around larger quantities of virus due to heavy sneezing, coughing. That’s why those people are told to stay at home…no brainer.. Over here people with very mild symptoms must stay at home also.

Although people who sneeze and coughs more heavily, and therefore spread it more that way, these people contribute LESS to the overall
virus spread because they get quarantined and are taken out of the equation.

Yesterday there was another update given by Osterhaus. The virus is present in the throat and nasal cavities as you know.During the first stages of the infection large quantities of the virus are produced and present in those parts of the body.(testing is done through nasal throat swaps)
Even at very short distance (one two feet) Talking to one another poses a risk.Depending somewhat on “how” you speak.Minute aerosol droplets with the virus can be produced when speaking…The risk may be smaller but its still there….

Let me clearify a bit on the situation here.
ONLY people with “corona symptoms INCLUDING SHORTNESS OF BREATH are tested in Holland.
So you must be really sick to get a test.( measures are taken to be able to test more people later)

People in healthcare, hospitals are tested more often.About 5% of the medical personnel in hospitals tested positive (week ago) and those infections could not be related to the corona “strands” hospitalized people had(luckily). There are different “strands” of the virus…(hope strands, is the correct word for dutch its called stammen”

This is also why our country shows much less infected people than for instance Germany (they test a lot more)
The amount of death’s is a much better indication of how many people are infected.

I agree but i’d take his word for it.(and most goverments do as well based on other virologists…
Why do you think “social distancing is in place?
people with symptoms are told to stay at home..

There are people with hardly any symptoms when infected. The first stage of infection…if those people go into crowds..

Its important how you frame “symptoms” some with slight sore throat would not assume they are sick at all…

      It’s common sense.

      AskWoody Plus

      Hi Paul T,

That number 55% was given by the Dutch virologist Ab Osterhaus in a informative independent tv broadcast.(yes… we have those over here)
He is well known and also working on the vaccine.
He made a pretty good prediction on how the scenario of the virus spread would go in the Netherlands. He is not related to our government.
He warned earlier that our government should take bolder steps against the spread of the virus.Steps that have finally (for the most part at least) been taken a few days ago.

In a few days we get more certainty if we got enough IC beds..Peak patients is then.. Although its crisis, we still manage for now.

He went a step further than the R.I.V.M (which advices our government)

What this number also entails is that people with No symptoms are not aware they’re spreading the they spread a lot of it if they mingle in crowds.This..until they they contact doctors because of symptoms, and get tested….if tested positive they get quarantined.
This is why Ab also stressed to take good social distancing measures en uphold those.

If the chain of infections is not broken and a relative small group of people ( lets say 6%) don’t comply..exponential spread still occurs.

Every person (with no measures taken) infects (in average) TWO to THREE others.
Thats why you have to take action soon!

When the crisis started there was a huge discussion “on how infectious” people could be if they were infected, but having no symptoms yet…now you know…if infected..they can spread it..mostly through cough..tiny aerosol particles in the air at short distance..the closer to it the worse off course.

An investigation on how infectious children are, is ongoing as we speak.. This in relation to opening schools in the future.

–PEOPLE WITH NO SYMPTOMS!! and PEOPLE WITH BEGINNING SLIGHT SORE THROAT– are likely causing 55% of the total virus spread. Be aware of that!

After a long time of uncertainty about the way the virus-transmissions occur (in relation of being part one of these 2 groups…
(The confirmed infected people and “non” ill people with no symptoms) virologist Ab Osterhaus in the Netherlands warned that studies show that most likely 55% of the virus-transmissions occur in this group of people BELOW….

–PEOPLE WITH NO SYMPTOMS!! and PEOPLE WITH BEGINNING SLIGHT SORE THROAT– are likely to cause 55% of the total virus transmission between people . Be aware of that!

      GOV measures Holland …18.000.000 people
FOR NOW only testing done on people with flue\respiration problems…lack of test kits
Social distancing 5 feet.. schools, bars etc are closed.
Shops still open…but many holders close anyway out of precaution..and lack of custmrs.
Dont go outside if you don’t need to
Groups larger then 3 persons not allowed…also 5 feet apart
      Work from home if possible
No visiting elderly in old folks homes etc.

The past 2 days things have tightened and fines can be issued if regulations are not complied my opinion this should have been done earlier.

Stay save..i believe supermarkets are a great risk
if you go shopping don’t touch your face
not until ur home and unpacked and cleaned ur hands…maybe better to clean
doorknobs u touched as well…(dish)soap and running water will do..
I Throw my used keys in a cup of boiling hot water as well..few seconds

Canned food en wrapped food in plastic, is rinsed with dish soap and water…

All of this takes about 20 minutes…20 minutes out of a lifetime
Had a pneumothorax 3 years ago so i better take some precautions.

Many recovered patients will suffer lung damage (decreased lung capacity, scar-tissue) due to long respiration times.

Stay save Lets hope the world will come out of this more united and not like its been as in “business as usual”

My heart goes out to the all the people working in hospitals (risking of getting sick themselves due to lack of protection) and not to forget to the people dying (often in solitude due to the sheer numbers of people in need.)

      Try to stay save

“although you didn’t go into that, made worse by of the precipitous and badly thought out shutting down of all nuclear stations in Germany and Japan”
Yes i agree on that.Shutting down the nuclear plants did’n help.Although Germany was fairly quick and ahead compared to the Netherlands, in starting a transition with solar power.Like always “the real” transition only speeds up when companies using those new technologies see opportunities to make money with it.We will get there some day if its not too late..
The beauty of it is that we dont need nuclear power in the future if we fully go into wind and solar companied by perhaps thorium.Batteries to store energy still cause much pollution i red so H would be much better. There still a lot of loss turning H back to current, but the Technology will improve.
If we all would manage to reduce our CO2 footprint all would be even better.I dont see that happen soon..In my own little way im trying to do just that..

I will look into india thorium reactors later.Heard about thorium reactors years ago! (thorium salt) Thorium reactors, 200 years for decay is very acceptable and it could help complement a transition.

A lot of underdeveloped countries want to take the path the developed countries took.Understandable..but it will take a big toll on earth and wildlife and eventually ourselves. Worldwide Co2 levels still are going UP!.We are in this together.

So many space travellers and we got one spacecraft…

Wil try to find info on the thorium reactors but i got a sense that if they were really viable a lot of info on that would have spread allready…

Found a lot of problems still..corrosion due to salt..etc…
who is closest to a working reactor?

Hi all.. from the Netherlands here…

I regret i dont have an option to use solarpanels on my rented apartment. There is space but the owners don’t allow it.We are in energie transition over here also and there will come a time when panels will be installed and sure that will increase the rent. By how much thats remains to be seen.Would have liked to be the owner of my own solar panels!
A friend of mine who owns his house and is an electrician bought his own panels second hand.
      50 euro’s each, 250Wpeak the converter costs were arround 250 euro…he meassured..panels still producing 230wp nice!

If i’d had the space ( not the difficult accessible roof) i would have started buying second-hand panels( 3 years old or less) already..takes about 4 years to return the invest.
That’s the way to go if you dont have much to spend. allways been against nuclear power, Although in some cases it would have been better , as i look upon it now. Burning cole as many east european countries and many others still do which is even worse. The steal industry is still depending on cole to produce steal.

Wet mining of cole also destroys the environment and communities.(like in brazil)
…and Oil…crude Oil big tankers…Aviation..say no more.Whe are destroying our planet
But hey that’s of topic and a long story..

Since whe have to transit into using clean energie we should invest in solar and wind now! Hopefully the production of Hydrogen (H) will become far more efficient cause that’s the best way to store the Solar energie
We are in the process (planning) off building large windmill parks in the north-see to produce H

      Nuclear fusion…still too far away..pitty

Our goverment (N.A.M) was recently forced to lessen the production of gas in my province, because many many slight earthquakes (1 to 3.6 magntd) damaged thousends of homes in the countrie side. This only after years of protest. Even in my city Groningen i’ve felt 3 of them…
Confidence in government over here is gone..Its all about econmic growth and nothing else.We are heading towards Us in that sense.

Good to see some states take their own route energie wise.

So if you got space…. and a little cash…take a leap and buy reasonable/good guality second hand panels and go! info on the web all over!

Stay save and take care everyone.. this isn’t some regular flue!

Edit: for content. No politics, please.

in reply to: What's Your Linux? #2189876
      AskWoody Plus

By the end of last year tried ubuntu 18 LTS, and debian en linux mint on an 11 year old HP microtower dual core 4GB RAM PC. Went for the xfce version of Mint 19.2.(got a slow computer) Mint plays a bit snappier than ubuntu witch uses the gnome shell.Wanted a working system without to much fuss and this works out for me.

Also i’m maintaining W10 and W7.Although i’ll probably will never be using w10..but was already there.. so i’ll wait a little more before i ditch it.

95% of the time on Mint now….music, video, email, gimp …perfect!
W7 is used for the odd program that doesnt run on linux.
Foobar2000 portable running happily on Mint with “wine”.. Xonar d2x soundcard works well..
After Mint install..(like ubuntu too) almost everything worked out of the box..including the Nvidia driver
When it comes to choosing the right version of linux ….almost every distro can be customized to ur needs…choose a distro that leans towards what you want to do with it.. Theres slight bigger learningcurve if you start with debian. First ubuntu or MINT then debian or another distro seems a good way to go .Followed some videos people made and went from there….

Im staying on Mint for now cuz it suits my needs.layout feels like w7. allready infected a (dyhard w7-fan) friend of mine…he’s on linux mint 19.3

      keep save..

I’m on Windows 10 1809 PRO 32 bit,  updated through Oktober 2019. Deferral settings 365 days.  quality deferred  22 days
When i upgraded form 1709 to 1809, with burned ISO on DVD,  i followed instructions below cause i wanted to prevent the upgrade from creating a extra System Reserved Partition.

“You might want to consider adding to the recommendations running setup.exe from the command-line as administrator and using few switches to enforce as much as possible the retention of the older settings or not creating an additional recovery partition”

      setup.exe /dynamicupdate disable /resizerecoverypartition disable /showoobe full /telemetry disable

      1) Will this still work,  when upgrading from 1809 to 1903?
with media creation tool i created the 1903 as adviced by woody. Did this two times.

sept 27   ISO (option save for different PC, or something like that)  2.976,192 kb  ISO
nov 4       ISO (option save for different PC, or something like that)  4.123,840 kb  ISO

      2) Main thing is, i want to keep my personal files and Apps. Is is mandatory that i upgrade to 1903 first to achief this? or can i wait till 1809 hits EOL
      3) if i proceed which of the two created ISO’s should i best use?

      AskWoody Plus

      Thanks Doug,

“Windows will support legacy mode however”  good to hear that, that was my main worry.b hinted on that earlier i believe. Also nice to hear i can just use the current GenuineTicket in case of a 64bit fresh install.

At the moment got 4x 1GB RAM. So switching RAM would be costly for this old machine. It’ll do for now. When i depart from w7 ( at least being online with it) i will disable the meltdown\spectre patches so the system will run faster.

I believe (correct me if im wrong) spectre patches were hardware (CPU, CHIPS) based and meltdown were sofware based

In case of a new PC,  is there site availlable where i can  get good info on CPU’s witch are not vulnerable to the spectre and meltdown ?

      Thanks for ur input.

      AskWoody Plus

      thanks Doug and b,

yes your right, the PC is very old and i upgraded from w7 (created GenuineTicket and used that for 1709) , to first 1709 then 1809(still using w7 too) now in triple boot with linux..trying debian and ubuntu… have been learning the past month  😉   hey want to depart from w10 in the future.. and use w7 offline, and yes will get a new system in the next year or so..or maybe somewhat later… if linux keeps running like it does now

Going by the answer of b and yours, i think its still possibe to upgrade from 1809 to 1909 but time will be running out..

If i were to upgrade from 32bit to 64 bit version w10, that would mean i have to do a  clean install from an ISO ? I ques i could not use the same GenuineTicket in that case
