AskWoody LoungerI am interested, what is your method? Are you home-brewing this yourself? If so, that’s already been done by the knowledgeable folks at MDL, I pointed out their script 3 posts up.
I did some reading to find an answer the question contained in the title of this thread (“So how DO you block the upgrade to Win10 1709”) and provided the 2 solutions above. I got only 2 thanks for my reply, frankly I’m surprised that no one else here tested the MDL script or the other solution (at least in a VM) and reported back if they worked or not… thought I had come up with something good.

According to av-comparatives.org, in their February 2018 real-world detection test, Windows Defender detected 100% of the malware thrown at it.
Not too shabby…

AskWoody Lounger>> DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DISABLE WINDOWS UPDATE COMPLETELY
I have just found 2 utilities that stop the entire Windows Update mechanism from running – one is an MDL project that can be found on Majorgeeks.com:
WUMT Wrapper Script 2.2.5
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/wumt_wrapper_script.html
The other is from a company that offers several nifty utilities:
Win Update Stop v1.2

AskWoody LoungerI haven’t had any issues with this site, but when I check uMatrix for http://www.AskWoody.com to see what scripts it loads, I see these 3 crazy URL’s:
pnamic.com
netanalyzer.space
worldnaturenet.xyz
The last 2 are related to Cloudflare — what do these scripts do?? I see scripts from these 3 being loaded when browsing other legitimate websites.

AskWoody LoungerYou may want to try SFCFix:

AskWoody LoungerI’m confused — the quote from the MSDN blog post given above by MrBrian says the “production” level fix will be available on Windows Update in August, but down in the comment section, Rich Lander says “We intend to do another preview release in August and then have all the fixes go “live” in September on patch Tuesday”…

I use ESET Antivirus which recently added ransomware protection. ESET calls this one “Win32/Filecoder.WannaCryptor”, it currently has 4 variants.

AskWoody LoungerYour friend may want to move the newsletter to MailChimp, it’s completely free if you have less than 2000 list members. With other solutions, there are some setup hoops to jump through with SPF/DKIM/DMARC DNS records, but MailChimp takes care of all that for you. Nice GUI for the newsletter editor.

AskWoody LoungerEver since I discovered this excellent site, the layout has puzzled me a bit.
On the home page are several news articles, with titles in bold type and underlined with the dashes. The article that prompted me to write this is
“A few cosmetic changes…”
Clicking on that link on the home page takes me to another page (call it a “secondary” page)
https://www.askwoody.com/2017/a-few-cosmetic-changes/
which has the same 4 paragraphs of text as the post on the home page. On this “secondary” page are TWO identical links
Comment on the AskWoody Lounge
Follow this link to join the discussionto the actual forum page
https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/a-few-cosmetic-changes/
where the replies/discussion are.
My main point is — why is the “secondary” page there at all, since it has the same text as the home page and just contains links to the actual forum page where the replies are? The secondary page has no additional content, so why not make the dashed-underline link on the home page take the reader directly to the actual forum page?
Smaller points:
On the actual forum page, shouldn’t the original post (the 4 paragraphs on the home page) be the first post, rather than the fragment currently there with a link BACK to the “secondary” page?
Again, on the actual forum page, there is a link at the top “Comment on the AskWoody Lounge” but the target of that link is the actual forum page, we are already there…

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 24, 2017 at 11:46 pm in reply to: Excluding drivers from Windows Update in Win10 (a WU option)? #97229Excellent article here on what’s new in the upcoming Creators Update (aka Redstone 2):
