      Portable CCleaner doesn’t have unnecessary c*** bundled with it. If you prefer to use the installable version, download it from ninite.com, they strip all the crud from all the installers they offer.

      FWIW, I have an old, refurbished Dell Latitude 2120 netbook with similar specs that I bought 3 years ago ($85CAN) just to experiment with different OSes.

      It came with Windows 10 Home, but I’ve replaced that with multiple Linux distros and found that it handled most of them exceptionally well.

      In particular, it ran very well when loaded with Neverware’s CloudReady ChromeOS clone, which effectively turned it into a Chromebook and very useful for anyone with limited online needs.

      July 6, 2020 at 8:50 am in reply to: Tech insights from relocating home and office #2277985

      Fred, I can sympathize with your situation having recently moved and downsized at the same time.

      My internet/tv/home phone provider is Rogers (I’m in Ontario, Canada) and during this COVID-19 crisis, they’re not allowing their installers to enter customers’ homes, only assist remotely until this passes.

      While I had no difficulty self-installing my new equipment, it is strictly a temporary setup for now. My gateway is currently at the other end of the house from my computers, but I’ve managed to get online by using telephone line adapters connected to the gateway and my primary desktop computer. It’s not as good as a dedicated direct ethernet connection but it’s actually quite usable. My laptops and Chromebooks can all take advantage of wireless gateway connections so no problems there.

      Still, I’ll be happier when I can eventually relocate some equipment so I can re-establish my complete home network including the NAS device I use for primary back-up. Until then, I have several external drives that will serve that purpose, along with a couple of cloud options.

      Good luck getting your home office up and running fully. And take care, stay safe and be well during these unusual and trying circumstances.

      @b:

      “Microsoft Edge asks for permission to collect diagnostic data for product improvement purposes and provides the capability to turn it off at any later point.”

      That’s a total lie for users on Windows 10 Home or Pro (I can’t speak to the other versions.) There is no asking for permission, merely for the amount of data (Basic/Required, Full/Optional, or whatever they’re calling it this week) that you’re willing to surrender.  And while you can delete data Microsoft has collected, you cannot turn it off at any later point, merely delete what they’ve collected again between erasures.

      March 18, 2020 at 8:46 am in reply to: Need a password manager #2208342

      I’ve tried several password managers over the years including Roboform, Dashlane, 1Password, KeePass, LastPass and more, but I’ve always come back to LastPass because it “just works” for me.

      However, I recently discovered Bitwarden (https://bitwarden.com) and have been very impressed with what I’ve seen in limited testing so far.  It’s free, open source, and works on every major OS platform.

      I plan to transfer my entire LastPass database to Bitwarden on one computer and my Pixel 3a phone and use it exclusively on those devices for 1 month. If it really can do everything that I need, it will replace LastPass on my other devices as well.

      Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this the same company that inflicted the whole GWX fiasco on unsuspecting users… Downloading gigabytes of data without notice or approval, installing Windows 10 in the background without notice or approval, and ignoring their own rules to make clicking a red X the equivalent of “Yes, please install Windows 10” instead of “take no action and close this dialogue box as you have every time before”?  Sorry, but I see no reason to trust anything they’ve said since, including the marketing hype you:be quoted above.

      So why did Microsoft approve it in the first place?  Seems to me there’s plenty of here blame to be leveled at both parties.
