      It works!

Unfortunately, even with the first NVMe boot drive I made, it wouldn’t go into safe mode. I did try that and thanks.

Well, the good news is that creating the bootable NVMe on the machine it’s going in with Acronis did the trick! It was the last thing I had to try before starting all over with a clean install.

Thank you agoldhammer for your suggestions and help. I appreciate it.

I suspected as much; that it would require a clean installation. That will be my next step if my restore from the original SSD doesn’t do it. Windows Repair’s correcting disk errors didn’t do anything but give me the same error message on a blue screen: 0xc000007b. Looking that up, it seems it applies more to installing games. Since I can’t even get into Windows, all the suggestions wouldn’t work for me.

My last resort before I do the re-format, clean install, is using Acronis with the new machine to create the bootable NVMe drive. The first one I made was on my laptop which is not the machine the drive is going to boot from. I’m thinking Acronis might have picked up info from the laptop to create the NVMe boot drive. Since I’m now making it with the new motherboard/machine, it might pick up what it needs from the BIOS to make it work. It’s just a thought.

      Then I do a start-from-scratch install.

      Thank you for your suggestion.

Thank you to all who gave suggestions.

    • in reply to: Win 11 22H2 won’t install feature updates #2556157

I finally got around to using the Media Creation Tool to get the latest Win11. I had to choose not to get the updates on installation, otherwise I had the same problem.

After the installation, I did get some updates and installed them successfully. I had it check again and it had to get 2022-09 (KB5019311); now downloading 2023-04 (KB5025305). It appears to be working.

I should have just done this at the beginning, as you suggested Susan.

      Thanks for all your help.

Thank you for the suggestions. I did everything you suggested – twice. The first time SFC did find and correct errors, but the same thing happened as described above. So I did everything again. This time SFC did not find any errors.

Not sure where to go from here. Any more ideas?

      Thanks for the help.

      The windows version is 22H

      222621.1265

the update that won’t install is:

      2023-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5025239)

There is no error message. It installs to 30%, rerboots and continues to 99%

Then I get the message: “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry, Undoing changes. Please keep your computer on.” Then it rolls back and reboots and is fine

    • in reply to: Win 11 22H2 won’t install feature updates #2555303

It’s the Cumulative Updates that won’t install. They go to 30%. computer reboots and goes to 99%, then I get the message: “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry, Undoing changes. Please keep your computer on.” Then it rolls back and reboots and is fine, but I don’t think I have the Cumulative Updates. Others do install just fine; the security ones and the NET ones do too.

      Thanks for your help.

Fortunately, just before this happened, I imaged the drive. I do that at the beginning of each month.

      Thank you for your suggestion.

The battery in this machine is not removable. I don’t see a small hole anywhere; not on the bottom or the sides. So I don’t think this machine has a re-set option. I do like how light and small this machine is. But I do miss an easily removable battery.

I guess you can’t have everything!

I hadn’t noticed that with my machine. I don’t usually leave it plugged in unless I’m using it. I wasn’t using the HP charger, but another one rated for the same 90 watts as the original.

It did the same thing again this morning while I was on the same website I was on when it happened before. Surprisingly, it was the Wall Street Journal website. I have no trouble using my desktop on the site. I just won’t use it on the laptop.

      Again, thanks for the info.

Oscar, Thank you for the suggestions. I do use the HP support Assistant. In fact, just before this happened, I had run through all of the diagnostics using it. I try to do it at least once a month along with making a disk image of the hard drive with Macrium Reflect.

I also have it running in the background, so if there are any updates, they show up and I get notified. There haven’t been for some time now, but when I first got the machine they were more frequent.

And I have used Esc to go into the bios to change the boot order to boot the Macrium Reflect USB stick when I’ve had to restore an image.

So thanks again for all your help and suggestions.

It seems to be working fine now.

But I did notice that it did the same thing when I was using the Wall Street Journal website, which is where I was when it happened the first time. But this time I was using the official HP charger and it was charging and the battery was full. I’m not sure it was charging the battery the first time. I think it was dead, which is why it wouldn’t start. That’s my guess.

Thank you all for the suggestions and help. I did try holding the power button down for a long time as Bob first suggested and briefly got the HP logo to flash on and immediately disappear. That was last night. Even though I had the machine plugged in while I was using it, I thought it odd that it would flash the logo.
So I plugged it in overnight and tried again. Again, it flashed briefly then disappeared. But I tried one more time and it did start normally. I can’t explain it other than to surmise that the machine wasn’t charging when I was using it plugged in.
I really appreciate everyone’s help. I did bookmark the HP key chart that Alex linked to for the future.
      Thanks again.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought I had held it down long enough.  However, I held the power button down even longer and the HP logo flashed briefly on the screen then went black again. I continued holding the button down, but nothing. I have since tried it again multiple times and have not gotten the logo again.

I do have an extended warranty on it with MicroCenter, so I may have to take it over there if I don’t figure this out by the end of the week.

      Thank you again.
