      Hi Susan,

When you say it’s okay to install the January updates, do you mean all of them on your Master Patch list for 01-24-23 or just the items on the 01-24-23 Master Patch list that says “Install”? I have only been updating the updates that say “Install” on the specific update lists, and always hide the ones you say to avoid or defer and don’t update/install until your Master Patch list says “Install”. Am I doing this correctly.

      Thank you

    • in reply to: Update to Win 10 21H2 #2487167

I am planning on updating to 21H2 and have a couple of questions:

1- Do I need to have my computer updated before I go to 21H2?

2- You recommend to do a full image backup, which I have done in the past. Can I do the full image backup over a prior version like 1909 or do I have to keep buying new thumb drives??

3- If I don’t update to 21H2 before Oct 11th, will I be able to still update?

      Thank you

      Susan,

I have windows 10 pro 21H1, before I install September’s updates you recommended, I have a question about the “group policy” issue under business users:

“The major side effect I’m tracking relates to Group Policy. Once the September updates are installed, there are reportedly problems with links deployed to the desktops. This appears to be acknowledged as an issue that will receive a hotfix, but there is uncertainty about when this will happen. Some reports indicate that by editing the Group Policy setting to turn off the Run in user context, the variable %userprofile% still works.”

I am a home user but with windows pro, do I need to do/change any settings under group policy?? I follow your settings for group policy in regards to the updates/versions.

      Thank you

Are we still on Defer for KB 5006365 for Net Framework 3.5 and 4.8 from November ’21? I checked the 12-28-21 list and it doesn’t show on the list.

      Thanks

      RG,

I had already allowed windows to install on my Lenovo. Is there a place to see what windows fixed/downloaded/installed??

On my HP laptop, I haven’t hit the install button yet, not sure what to do?? I looked at the “Reliability Monitor” and noticed I have a lot of “HP Simple Pass” not functioning correctly. I don’t use HP simple pass, never have. Wondering if I should just uninstall it?

      Thanks,

      TJ

      RG,

I did look at Device Manager, and saw no yellow question marks. Should I allow windows to install?

    • in reply to: How to get 21H1 but not 21H2 #2404588

      PKCano,

Thanks, I do have a Microsoft account (I think). Does it matter if you use the Microsoft account or not? I think by keeping the computer from connecting to the internet is the safest way to set up the computer settings. So, there is no advantage to the Microsoft account vs the local way you suggest?

If you have any advice about settings regarding setting up an Administrator account vs Administrator and a User account. The computer is only used by me.

If you have advice about downloading/updating drivers and BIOS through Microsoft or use Lenovo Vantage (I’ve been told to use Lenovo Vantage). In the past I’ve not always updated the drivers, nor the BIOS, with the idea “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it??

Any other helpful hints for setup and security settings?

Thank you very much, I have been following your “ABK2000016 Guide for Windows Update Settings for Win 10”, since I signed up for Ask Woody site. Your posts and knowledge are very helpful!!

      Thanks

      PKCano,

      Thanks for your quick response!

One other question: I just purchased a new Lenovo Legion 5 gaming computer, It came with Windows 10 Pro, I am not sure which version (20H2 or 21H1). Do you have a list or suggestions about how to go about setting up/steps when I turn the computer on for the 1st time?

I want to make sure I can change the windows update settings to Configure Automatic Updates = Enabled, value = 2 (notify download/install and the Target Release Version before windows does it’s updating. Not sure if I should keep the internet off until I change these settings? Do I need to log in to Microsoft account?

      Hi,

I’m getting ready to set my Windows 10 Pro lap top from 2004 to 21H1 utilizing the “Target Release Version” Method. I know I have till the 14th, I just want to make sure I have my back up and system image and repair disc done. My question is: What updates need to be done before I change the “Target Release Version” to 21H1? I haven’t done any of the November updates yet, I was waiting for the Defcon-4  recommendation. Can I update to 21H1 without the November updates? …OR…Should I wait a bit longer for the Defcon-4 notice, even though I’ll be past support??

      Thank you

      Hi,

I’m on Windows 10 Pro version 2004. Do I need to update to version 20H2 or 21H1 before the windows 11 comes out?? or will I be able to update to either one anytime in the future?
