    • in reply to: Microsoft Edge imports other browsers’ passwords #2378344

After reading this thread, I am thinking now about further expanding my use of 2FA with an authentication app.

With the sites that I use it on now, I have enabled the feature to always allow this browser without the need for authentication. Are there any security risks using the 2FA authentication like that?

      Thanks

Brian’s article was the only place I’ve read that story.

My suggestion to reduce the number of subscribed folders was based on your comment that send/receive was taking a long time. But reading here today I think you are saying the sending part (SMTP) is  the problem. If that is so, that previous suggestion would not help. That helps troubleshoot receiving problems.

But looking at my IMAP settings for Gmail, i have Outgoing Server at 587 with STARTTLS.

Try unsubscribing from some folders, just as a test.

Right click on “Gmail” in your Outlook folder list, select IMAP folders, click Subscribed tab, then Query. And unsubscribe from all except the Inbox.

What happens if you check the send function using File/Account Settings/Manage Profiles?

And what happens if you go into the Outbox and select the message and tell it to Send?

    • in reply to: Have you enabled Win10’s ransomware protection? #2368035

In Norton 360, their “Data Protection” feature is configured as shown here.
I’ve never heard a peep out of it, so not sure if it works.

I would think that somewhere along the line i would have used a web app that would not be in their whitelist that created a file that I saved to my docs folder.

Or maybe it just has a very comprehensive whitelist.

Or maybe it’s smart enough to know that if I am using the download/Save To function, that it is not a risk?

      B’s directions above will work.

or an alternative is to use a different browser for the second account. Then you can be logged in to both accounts at the same time, on two different browsers.

You will need to download Google Chrome or Firefox, then on that browser go to outlook.com (yes I know it is not what you expect but it will work) and log in to your 2nd account, the hotmail account. (No need to close the first browser)

Another alternative is to use the Mail App that is built in to Windows 10. There may be an icon for it at the bottom of your screen. You will have set up the two accounts in it.

    • in reply to: What would you suggest? #2362208

If you can afford it, I say new computer with an SSD.

If money is really tight, then a spinning hard drive to keep cost down. And as Susan said, at least 8 GB RAM.

    • in reply to: Command windows popping up during boot #2361217

Thanks to all for the ideas.

It is hard to track this down because it only happens about 20% of the time.

Go into the task scheduler and look for “on startup” or “on login”. They are typically the once launching an app in the background.

I think this is the best way to track it down. I’m going through them now.

      Thanks

      Yes, thanks.

I forgot to mention I’ve got 21 startup items in there.

They all look familiar to me.

I was hoping someone would have seen this before and save me the trouble of a lot of rebooting trial and error in order to pin it down.

Thanks for the video, I’ve always used installation media for the upgrades, I will try the iso site this time.

      Thanks for the reply.

I got excited and started downloading, but then I realized why I had skipped it before.
PKCano in his original suggestion said to not download it if it says Preview.

“For those of you on Win10 – the CUs are cumulative. Instead of installing the Patch Tuesday CUs, I would recommend installing the latest Out-of-Band patches for your version if you decide to patch,
+ They may be offered in the “Optional” section through Windows Update.
+ If they are not offered through Windows Update, they can be downloaded from the Microsoft Catalog, (search string = 2021-03 cumulative update for) saved on the desktop, then installed manually by double clicking on them. Be sure you DO NOT download those labeled “Preview.””

      Try again! 🙂

I tried again 2 more times. Still fails.

see screenshot of my history, not installed previously either.

      Thanks

For those of you on Win7/8.1, if you decide to patch, install updates as usual, then download the OOB patches from the MS Catalog and install them manually (as described for Win10 above). Win7 KB5001639 and Win8.1 KB5001640 OOB’s download links are available through AKB2000003.

I went to the MS Update Catalog, downloaded the update    Win 10 2004, it says for 1903 and later (I have 1909). It is the x64 version, and not the Server version.

But when I try to install it, it says its not applicable for this computer.
I definitely don’t have it installed already, I checked the update history.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks
