Also if an XP box it may need to have Media player 11 (or was it 10) installed as that loaded MTP & PTP protocol functionality.
(assumption here is that the note does NOT show up as a usb storage device as my SIII does not)

      I know I am poor on regimen:eek:

I am less worried about data oblivion than “OS/it is setup just the way I want with 11 years of installed programs” oblivion.

I am toying w/ the idea of going w/ W7 when/if I build a new box, I am just not ready to migrate now. Now here is a question in that regard (yes I know a squeaky fresh install is always recommended): Can W7 32 bit on a 2 core processor be migrated to a newer 4,6,8 core?

Ok finally got around to posting in the ZA forums (They did not like anything about my old forum ID, what a pain)
ZA free does NOT have a HIPS.

      Hi!

The latest ZAfree inherited the smardefense function from the retail versions. While in the retail version also include HIPS (monitoring for dangerous behavior) the ZAFree one only provides local/internet zone(s) outbound control.

Programs and executable are added to the program list but they are dormant unless they access to the local/internet zone(s). On default settings, executable and files are given permissions based on the central ZA database of known good / know bad (cloud). If the file is not presented in the central database it will be added but you will see “?” all across the different sections.

On top of the smartdefense, Microsoft certified executable are granted access automatically regardless of the program control settings. If you want to turn OFF this feature you will need to UNcheck “Enable Microsoft catalog utilization” (somewhere in the advanced options). The same applies to smartdefense database that can be turned off under the ZA program control section.

With both features turned OFF you will flooded by requests (especially on fresh install of ZA) and normally this is not recommended unless you know what are you doing. Blocking permissions to certain executables may only give raise to issues under particular scenarios that are not easy to track back to ZA once they happen.

Always keep in mind that ZAfree offers limited outbound control on the system as compared to the retail version, you will need to adapt yourself to those limitations (including no support) otherwise you may want starting testing other free tools to see if they better fit your needs.

      Hope this helps.

So now what was that HIPS standalone??
      Malware Defender
      WinPatrol

that or private firewall and ditch ZA

      Lou
I have the LIDE 500 F. The software I normally use is called Canoscan toolbox.
The options as you listed do not seem to be available on that interface.
But having the inspiration to look about I noticed a shortcut to ‘ScanGear Starter’ which brings up an interface similar to your jpg. Curiously the short cut leads to :
      C:WINDOWStwain_32CNQSGSGST.exe
and a ScanGear directory under program files is empty.
And perhaps true to form the help button on said interface does nothing obvious. I will have to play with this when ever. It always seems I am in a hurry when I use my scanner.

PS just a thought, this scanner has always annoyed me as the usb connection is on the ‘front’ where the function buttons are. Just backwards, what could they have been thinking?

Yumi the USB multi boot creator has an option for Hirems also. I am trying it today on a stick I made last year. I admit I have been a bit hesitant to explore Hirems until now.

I find the Internet of Things a bit scary even withstanding the privacy issues. I was intrigued by the Nest firealarm, but finding out Nest could reprogram it from afar w/o my sayso is alarming (no pun unintended).

BTW any body have a rec for a good ‘firewall/program’ monitor for Android? maybe I should ask in Other OSs?

You did just burn the iso as an image to CD, right?
You could try a O/S install disk if you have one just to eliminate a bios problem.

It does sound like amazing stuff, thinking about the graphene condom, I am wondering if it might turn out to be one of those substances that we don’t want left to blow in the wind. As is Asbestos. Especially interesting is the phrase “experiments where electronics can integrate with biological systems”. Google Glass so passe. Implants are the Way. Sci Fi writers are again ahead of the curve here.
