Besides the Defender update & KB3080149 (that I uninstalled to prevent telemetry updates), nothing else currently appears. As you said, KB2952664 & KB2976978 were re-released 02/09/17, but pulled with the rest. As for Why… I got nothin’. If Windows Update is compromised, that severely shakes any faith I have in Microsoft.

Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

    • Wonderful, woody! Still interested in Cortana, the nosy babe… but my Android phone doesn’t have enough storage to update my apps or add her. Unless I uninstalled Pokemon GO… would like to update that & play some again.

    • As for Mr. Brinkmann’s suggestions, I found I had already installed KB2976978 and KB3080149. I uninstalled them today. The Diagnostic Tracking Service is already disabled and the other KB’s he recommends I can’t find that they’re installed on my 8.1 machine. If I discover them later, I’ll get rid of them. As for KB3044374 (to upgrade from 8.1 to 10); I’ll keep that for now. I still want to upgrade to Windows 10 (hopefully for free). I’m not in the CEIP, so that peeper is taken care of… for now.
UPDATE: After I uninstalled the updates above, KB3080149 reappeared; Recommended but unchecked. Not letting Windows Update the ability to install anything but Important. However, KB3121461 reappeared as Important. Not part of the list; a Security Update published on 1/11/2016.

    • in reply to: Win10 telemetry tweaking #93707

The method that I gave (in a comment in post “Care to join a Win7 snooping test?”) for listing what Diagnostics Tracking Service sends in Windows 7 probably also works in Windows 10.

It works in Windows 8.1 the same as Win 7. However, Diagnostic Tracking Service has been renamed in Windows 10 (probably to confuse & hide). Here’s a link explaining & how to disable: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/11/19/microsoft-rena-and-telemetry/

    • I bought Office 2013 (Click-To-Run) when I bought my Windows 8 (now 8.1) laptop. In the past, having Office automatically update didn’t cause problems. However, in October 2016 (maybe September), when I tried to open Office (usually Word), I got a dialog box saying “We’re sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?” I got this for 1 or 2 months whenever I tried to open Word (or Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote). None of the ‘answers’ on the MS Support forum seemed to help, except when I was told to download & run OffCAT (Office Configuration Analyzer Tool). It found “Possible slowness issues because Windows Installer logging is enabled”. By clicking “Fix it for me”, that seemed to clear the problem. That was on 12/04/16. When I ran OffCAT on 12/16/16, I found Office needed updating from 15.0.4875.1001 to 15.0.4885.1001. I updated Office, then set it back to Not Automatically Update. I ran OffCAT again on 01/15/17 & January had showed up. I needed updating from 15.0.4885.1001 to 15.0.4893.1002. As of 01/15, I am up to date.

Sounds like an episode of The Twilight Zone to me, Woody! Meanwhile, in an alternate reality about a week or 2 before Trump took office… http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/1/9/1618243/-Cartoon-Farewell-address

Try running Windows PowerShell (admin) if it’s available on Windows 7. That’s where I ran SFC instead of the Command Prompt.

I followed Noel’s instructions, doing VERIFYONLY 1st, then SCANNOW. SCANNOW indicated problems it couldn’t repair, so I ran DISM, then SCANNOW again. My PC was low on battery power & shut down on the last scan. I ran SCANNOW again & I have the warm fuzzies! This was the 1st time ever running SFC & DISM since I bought my Windows 8 (now 8.1) laptop 4 years ago.

Sad, but necessary. Whether you do your own C&D or have an attorney, they’re piggybacking on your past laurels with WSN to con solicit new subscribers. With no benefit for you! They’re in the wrong.

Well! At first I wondered how long it took to program all the moves in. Then I realized, “Hey! It’s supposed to be doing this on its own!” It is a little scary, but interesting. The humanoid lifting 10 lb. boxes looked a little buff… nano-steroids? The ‘dog’ robot, or robot with an arm for a head, was getting some guidance with the operator via joystick. Still, shades of ‘The Jetsons’… now where are our flying cars & jetpacks?! 😉

    • Woody I have Office Home & Student 2013, Click-to-Run version & am at 15.0.4815.1001. Since I have the 4 basic Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) & not using Outlook or other affected pieces, I’m relatively OK?
BTW, if I do need to roll back to a previous level at some time, how do I do it? As you said, Microsoft doesn’t make it easy, so it must be a b***h!
