Had you installed any utility software during the session that triggered the BSOD?

Could you carefully read and follow the instructions here: http://www.sysnative.com/forums/bsod-crashes-kernel-debugging/68-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-8-7-vista.html Sections 1 > 5 and attach the resulting zip file to a reply back here and we’ll try to figure out the cause.

Not sure if it will be possible to work out how the shortcuts were lost though, that’s a very strange occurrence.

Nothing new had been installed during the session when the crash occurred.

A subsequent user initiated reboot restored all the settings to ‘normal’.

Will work on getting the info requested from BSOD.

MS has a fix for this which may help, either with the relevant version package or DIY steps http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520

Downloaded and ran the link in both 32 Bit and 64 Bit modes – when executed, both said my machine didn’t need ‘the fix’.

So I am still unable to get Windows Update to work.

OS Disc in my posession is the original. On the machine is has been updated to SP3.

I have a number of Software packages that I have legally downloaded that I don’t have disc’s for so formating the hard drive is not a option.
