MS-DEFCON 4: An unusually good month for installing updates

Woody Leonhard

By Woody Leonhard

Most months, I begrudgingly drop to MS-DEFCON 3 and warn people about numerous outstanding patching problems. This time around, things are better.

We still have two big problems with the Win10 cumulative patches. In some cases, you can install an update, reboot … and find screwed-up icons and files no longer where you left them. Also, some people are having trouble with audio after updating — although it isn’t clear whether the fault lies with the update or there’s some funny business going on with drivers.

In both cases, the problems are fairly well understood — if not always easily fixed. That’s led me to move to MS-DEFCON 4: you should install all outstanding Windows and Office patches now.

Of course, it’s much too early to install the next version of Windows, Version 2004 (aka the “Windows 10 May 2020 Update”). Let’s wait and see what hilarity ensues. So make sure you know what you’re clicking before you click it.
