I’m developing training for XP applications and need to capture some screens, buttons in particular. I’ve tried FullShot’s button capture and it doesn’t work properly. And as far as buttons are concerned SnagIt only allows fixed region captures. Just wondering, what screen capture software does everyone else use to quickly capture XP buttons? And does anyone know if there’s an available archive somewhere that includes all of the button icons? PLEASE HELP! (My hands are cramping from cropping!)

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

GuestMarch 9, 2001 at 10:54 pm #1779923By buttons I mean toolbar buttons within the application. For instance, I want to capture the New Document button in Word 2002. I know there are dozens of applications out there that let you capture a region (specified, freehand, or otherwise). What I’m really looking for is for the FullShot button tool to work with XP…didn’t work in Office 2000 either. FullShot used to allow you to click the button capture option, point at the button you want, then click…it’s captured. No fussing or positioning of a fixed rectangular region or cropping afterward. It’s frustrating. I’ll keep looking. Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 9, 2001 at 11:05 pm #1779925I think Doug has the answer. From the Snagit Website:
A technology breakthrough that allows you to capture toolbar buttons, taskbar buttons, icons, individual menu items, list and tree view items, and each element of a web page in Internet Explorer. No other screen capture application has this feature. SnagIt v5.1 supports this feature for Windows 98 and Windows 2000. This feature was testing using Windows ME beta. No known problems were encountered. -

GuestMarch 15, 2001 at 5:18 am #1780228What about Hypersnap-DX? It doesn’t capture individual objects, but captures real windows. So, the toolbar is a window, the menu bar is a separate window, etc. And it’s hierarchical too, so you can grab a window that has several windows inside it just as easily.
And yes, it does have full screen capture – even works with DirectX and Open GL applications.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2001 at 7:34 pm #1780264Well this works in in Office versions up to 2000.
Go Tools, Customise, and ignore the resultant Dialog Box. Right Click on the button of interest and you should have an option to copy the button image. It can then be pasted where you want it.
Obviously this only of use in Office programs (an maybe some other MS products), but it might be of help.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 10, 2001 at 3:59 am #1779952i’ve been using paintshop pro v6, it has several capture options. I also use an old capture program (Collage Complete for Windows v1.0, circa win3.1) that many publishing companies use.
the advantage of using the old one is that it saves automatically, converting the images to gray scale or whatever i format i need. it increments the filename and # too, a major help when working on publications.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 11, 2001 at 6:43 pm #1780035cheap yes, lazy no. it takes more work to use prntscrn. copy, paste, save.
with sreen print utilities you turn on capture and copy and paste are done for you, with some programs, naming and saving is too.
for me, time is money and i can earn back the $100 PSP cost in no time. I think snag it is less, so it’s payback is faster. The one given me by the publishing company was lic by them. Good thing, only Woody makes enough on books to live off the royalities.
you can do multiple shots that can be put together for a movie, often based on a time lag (like every 5 sec)
