AskWoody LoungerFebruary 10, 2020 at 4:11 am #2137732Windows certainly doesn’t hold the importance that it once did for Microsoft under Balmer. Nadella is obviously moving beyond Windows and focused on cloud services. Panay seems to be a OK fit but he was part of the Steve Sinofsky era of Windows. Personally I think Microsoft considers Windows as we know it as a legacy platform. One that will survive only because it has to not because Microsoft wants it too.

AskWoody PlusFebruary 10, 2020 at 2:55 pm #2138088If it does, then Apple will have to start ‘renting’ its OS as well to stay competitive. Not saying that there won’t be a slippery slope that eventually gets us there, but right now points A and B are still separated by a sizeable gulf. The longer it stays that way the better.

AskWoody MVPFebruary 10, 2020 at 4:14 pm #2138110Windows itself will eventually be a subscription-only cloud service…
I don’t see even a remote possibility of that happening. I got my copies of Windows 10 free, Which Microsoft said is the last version of Windows, and they keep updating/upgrading it for free. Their Azure services are not free, and to the best of my knowledge are subscription services, but what business sense does it make to put an additional price barrier between the end user and Azure services?
Windows 10 will live on as free, unless you buy a new OEM PC/laptop, in which case it’s included in the price of the machine. For those of us who upgraded Retail Windows 7 to Windows 10 have portability to a new DIY build when the need arises.
Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things. We were all once "Average Users".Viewing 3 reply threads -
