GuestOctober 17, 2016 at 8:04 am #31332There was an episode of Star Trek which dealt with this very issue — an AI control unit had been installed in a starship, and it got out of control, attacking other starships. It also protected itself from being disabled. Of course, Capt. Kirk figured out how to disable it, and everything ended up OK.
Yes, I am very concerned about AI outpacing our ability to control it. There need to be backdoors so as to not let that happen. But of greater concern is the possibility of a human being or group of humans taking control of the technology and using it against everyone else.
As far as self-driving cars, this invite all kinds of dangers into your life if you have one – from hackers, from car computers that die while you are driving, and from governments who can then decide when and where you’ll drive, all for the public good of course.

Actually, I’m looking forward to self-driving cars, although it’ll take a while for them to have an effect. In Tennessee alone there are 400+ road fatalities every year, and I bet self-driving cars cut that by at least 50%.

All I know is we’re going to miss president Obama when he’s gone.
He has class, dignity, intelligence, and honesty….qualities in short supply in our current cast of political wanna be leaders…. -

GuestOctober 17, 2016 at 1:44 pm #31338Obama thinks we could eventually put a permanent human colony on Mars but it is more likely that we will put AI there first.
Stephen Hawkings and Obama want industry and business to make intelligent choices and not create chaos and despair. One bright spot that Obama and Stephen Hawkings champion is the work that is going on at IBM Watson. The technology has the potential to make precision medicine and tailored therapies available to millions of cancer patients instead of the small number now treated at elite medical centers.
HAL is not going to make the human race irrelevant or slaves of AI, it is going to be some stupid IoT device that becomes a botnet.

Isn’t this what apparently happened with Toyota cars where the accelerator pedal stopped responding?
I had an incident with my Toyota86 where the power steering stopped responding due to a malfunctioning computer, which is a known issue now. Nothing against the Toyota brand which is generally very reliable if not the most reliable, the 86 is more a Subaru than a Toyota, just few examples of which I know.
And this one about a Jeep
