    Why does a template that contains macros have to be in the same directory as the files created from that template. I have files in other directories that were made with this template and their macros will not work.

      The files do *not* have to be in the same directory as the template they’re made from at all. But if you’re having a problem accessing that template’s macros, you probably need to re-attach or add the template to the file:

      Tools | Templates and Add-ins, then either Attach or Add the template file.

        The file created from the template is protected as is the template. After looking at some more files created from this template I found that there were files that still worked. Why would the link be broken on some and not all?

          One possible cause for this would be if you moved the template to another directory at some point.

          When new documents are created from a template, the template’s path is stored in the document, and this is an absolute, not a relative path.
          So if you should later move the template’s location, the documents will no longer “see” the template.

          Stephan’s suggestion for reattaching the template is correct; if the documents are protected you may need to unprotect them temporarily in order to do this.

            It does, thank you. I discovered that in order to attach the template to a non-functional document both need to be unprotected for this to take place. Thanks again
