I have just upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP. I have 3 users on the XP system. (I had only one user with Windows 98). Logging on as Jim and launching Word when I go to File, New I get the Window with all the Office templates. When I log on with another user name (Nancy) and open Word, going to File, New does not show the Office template window, and if I go to the Other Templates choice there is nothing there. I have tried going to Tools, Options, File Locations and under User Templates, pointing to the location where the Office templates are, (Program Files, Microsoft Office, Templates, 1033), but this does not seem to work. How do I correct this multi-user problems? (I also posted this in the Word section.)

AskWoody_MVPNovember 19, 2001 at 6:20 pm #552965This was a up grade install of Windows XP, and were the accounts (profiles) set up in Win 98 ?
If so I would reinstall Office and make sure that you select ALL users. Also when a different acount is run for the first time make sure that the “Installer” runs. If not you will still have the same problem. The installer sets up the different folders under the user account name including the templates.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2001 at 6:56 pm #552975Don’t reinstall Office – it’s not necessary. Windows XP has “Shared Documents” folder (the same as Win2k and WinNT). You can see it if you open Windows Explorer. Copy all documents you want to share in this folder (for example, shared templates suppose to be in
c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersTemplates
Then open Word, click Tools | Options, File Locations tab and highlight Workgroup Templates; click Modify button and point it to that folder, if it’s not specified already. Check this setting for each user. -

AskWoody LoungerNovember 20, 2001 at 12:58 pm #553230Jim:
I’m running Office XP but I imagine the scenarios are the same. All of the templates are located in “C:Documents and SettingsdefaultApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates”. Each user also has a similar folder (substitute ‘username’ for ‘default’). I simply copied all of the templates from the ‘default’ user to the ‘username’ Template folder. I also had a custom toolbar set up which was not accessible to the other users. Again, simply copy the ‘normal.dot’ template from the ‘default’ location to the ‘username’ location. The only thing that this didn’t resolve was the ‘Avery Wizard’ (label making wizard from Avery Dennison). For this situation (by logging on as each of the different users), I simply wrote a small macro to run the Avery Wizard and then assigned a toolbar button to run the macro.
Hope this helps.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 20, 2001 at 3:08 pm #553283In the Documents an Settings folder I have no Template folder for All users or Default user. There is a Templates folder for each of the 3 users. All have Normal.dot and one other template that I copied to the Template folder, but 2 of the 3 users can not see this template when I go to File-New. One user does see the Template window when I go to File-New in Word. I fixed the problem by coping the “good” Normal.dot file from the user that works to the Templete folder for each of the other users in Documents and Setting”user”MicrosoftTemplates. Hope this helps someone else.
