I’m sure this question has been asked and answered, but I can’t find it.
Am about to purchase a notebook pc. I know I need either Win2kPro or XPPro since I need networking to a Novell lan/wan.
The other consideration is that the agency standard is (and will be for a while) Office2kPro. Is O9 REALLY compatible with XPPro? … or should I stick with Win2kPro?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 18, 2002 at 6:15 pm #571154I used – wait, use – Office 9 on Windows XP Professional at home. I upgraded it at one point to OXP SP1, and was so dissatisfied with the results that I restored a backup to get myself out of OXP’s evil ways. Maybe it was because of the upgrade from Office 9, but either way – it was misery.
So yes, it’s compatible – and if you can find the version without Office 2000 Service Pack 2, go for it.
You will find Win2000 to be less (not a lot, but still less) demanding of your hardware. My preference is for XP Pro, which has been rock solid for me, and I am an inveterate tinkerer (translation: I break Windows).

Maybe the adverse comments I think I’ve heard were from Win2k and OXP.
[/indent]I believe so. I know that Woody has made remarks to this effect in his newsletters. Although I haven’t had any major issues with it (OXP on Win2000), by and large I think that OXP is rather unstable and has too many little, let’s say, “annoyances” that detract from its overall usefulness.
I think you will find that Office 2000, SP1, is the best of the breed when it comes to just getting things done.

Our other issue is that we’ve done some app development in Access 97 which we moved to 2k and Access XP just “ain’t the same” (According to informed opinion).
It would be nice if they left alone a dbms that works and has garnered a lot of support in the user area for a few years and quit trying to make it into a “front end for SQL”.
