(Not sure if this falls under Safe Computing or General)

OK. I thought I had a fail-safe plan – I bought an external HD to store all my backup files – photos, music, setup files etc. I use Retrospect Express to copy specific folders and files weekly. I did this because I was tired of copying to CD, and even more tired of the time it took to backup everything if I wanted to do a clean-install. Now, to do a clean-install I simply run Retrospect and then start with the re-formatting. Retrospect can do it in a blink! Now the issue:

I read a horror story about someone who did exactly as I am doing and then lost both their computer HD and the external HD! Yikes, I never gave that a thought!

So, am I back at square one? Is the only safe way to make CDs? Ugh!

I don’t know about Retrospect, Sherry, but your strategy sounds like a pretty good (and reasonable!) one to me. I’d say that the case you read about is rare, although always a remote possibility. Let’s face it, the same thing could happen if you WERE using CDs. One or more discs could fail or be bad and you might not know it until you try to use it later. Protecting against these types of possibility is why some people (or businesses) use a rotating backup strategy involving multiple drives. But, unless it’s practical for you to buy more than one external drive, that may not be possible for you.

Since I mentioned it to someone in another thread, that’s why I use this hardware and multiple (and inexpensive) hard drives.

      Nothing is completely safe.

Many many years ago I used to back up my Windows 95 PC to tape. When the hard disk failed I managed to boot from a floppy and copy the corrupted hard disk all over the backup tape – due to a slight syntax error in the restore command!

The lesson I learned from this is to have multiple different backups, of different ages, in different places and on different media, and then to be very very careful.
