I am trying to open an Outlook archive file, but when I go to File, Open, Outlook data file, and point to the archive file, and click on it, it does not open and I am back in my Outlook.pst file.

I ran the In Box Repair Tool (scanpst) on the archive file. Errors were corrected. I then tried to open the archive.pst file with Outlook (File-Open-Outlook Data File), pointed to the archive file and was returned to Outlook with no sign of the archive file.

You may have to create a new e-mail profile in the Mail control panel.

And no error message? Just to be sure it’s not pushed offscreen, minimize your PST (and your Exchange Mailbox if applicable) folder tree view in the Explorer window by pressing the minus sign on the root of each service (PST or Exchnage Mailbox). Does it show up? If not, check that you are opening the correct Archive PST by looking at the File | Archive dialog Archive path.

(Another archive viewing trap I have fallen into is to set Mail Folders View – a moment of panic when I opened my Calendar Archive and didn’t see any Calendar Folders. Set the Explorer to view to All Folders when looking at Archives. But that doesn’t seem to apply here.)

I am sure I am opening the correct archive folder.
Where do you set Mail Folders View. I do not see any archive folder in All Mail folders.

At the bottom of the left side explorer Pane, click the item in the attached graphic (if you have minimized that area, you will see only the icon, not the text).

I notice that you have a lot of identically named PSTs – you can change the display name by right clicking the PST and changing Properties | Advanced | Name – it may help you track down which PST you are trying to open.

About 18 months ago I converted my old non-Unicode pst file to a Unicode pst file following the instruction in this MS Article. Thats when all the PST files showed up in the All Mail Folders panel. I only have one outlook.pst and one archive.pst folder. I have copied this pst folder to another computer and opened it with Outlook and only one pst folder appears in the All Mail Folders panel on the other second computer. Scanpst reports no errors in either file.

OK, I’m unclear – looks like you have ghosts of your two PSTs – “Personal Folders” and “Personal Folders (N)”. Are these two PST’s? Is one of them the archive PST? Which of them can you close by right clicking on the root of tyhe PST?
