    Watch out creating a new Library in Windows 7! It can be nightmarish! Recently, I wanted to start a new Library of Sound Recordings to record stuff off my CB radio while talking on it onto my laptop using the Sound Recorder. I was able to create a new library, but when I went to save to it, Windows 7 insisted that I had to create a folder to put it in first!. I typed the folder name in the line provided and got: Invalid Folder: folder does not exist. What? I just created it? I contacted Microsoft Support and guess what?…They didn’t know either! They had never been briefed on that. It was assumed that no one would want to create a new library. It was while I was on with support that it dawned on me what you had to do! When you get the screen to create the folder, other folders are shown in there that are in other libraries, A Library is like the Linux root directory. You go to the top and click New Folder and you name it and then click okay. The folder appears amongst the others. You double click that and then the folder is created in the new library! You can then save your file to it! This characteristic of Windows 7 surprised me. It’s more like how the Root Directory works in Linux! The root directory has a totally different method of creating a new subdirectory than those below it. So it is now with Windows 7! The root folder directory is a Library in Windows 7, so it works differently…Interesting!

      I would create and save the music in a folder to a more secure location, then drag and drop the folder into your libraries area.

      Windows 7 Librariesare mostly pointers to the actually data folders. For the most part the actually data folders are in the UsersName folder. The Libraries provide a convienient place to place shortcuts if you will to the folders to allow finding your stuff without having to drill down to the actual data folder. The link provided has a good explanation of the Win 7 folder feature.

      I’ve had the repeatable experience of when creating and naming a new folder in a shared network location on another computer, I get an error, does not exist, if I click on it to open it directly after naming. It still appears as New Folder (the incorrect name) but clicking on it returns a does not exist error. I have to refresh the page and then the folder will appear with the correct name and it will open when clicked on without error.

      The simplest way to get a new library going is to create the new Library and give it a name. Next, create a folder anywhere on your hard drive you desire, and give it a name. Then copy any files you want into the folder, and right click the folder, select Include in library , and choose the name of the new library you have just created.

      Now when you click on the new library, you will see the folder and if you open the folder you will see the files you copied into the folder. Meanwhile, the original folder and files in that folder reside wherever you created them on your hard drive.

      There is at least one similarity between libraries and Windows Media Player playlists, loosely speaking of course. The songs in a playlist are pointing to the real songs wherever they are stored while a library is a virtual representation of real files located elsewhere. The original files reflect any revisions you make to the virtual files stored in the library, which is not true for playlists.
