I bought and installed Acronis 2012 on a new Toshiba Satellite L750 running Windows 7 64-bit with all updates, realized it wasn’t what I wanted, and within a few days uninstalled it. That was the beginning of a nightmare. First, I discovered that Acronis had turned off both Windows backup AND Windows Restore. I managed to recover from that…

But I have now discovered that none of my USB thumbnail drives work. Other USB functions are fine – my USB mouse works, I can charge my iPod and iPhone just fine, etc. The thumbnail drives work in other computers so it’s not the drives. When I plug in a thumbnail it shows up in Device Manager as not functioning usually with error 32, or sometimes error 8, indicating that a necessary service has been usurped by some other process.

I’ve tried uninstalling the driver and having it redetect on boot, but it tries to install the driver and then indicates that it failed. Updating the driver doesn’t work – it just tells me that the disk drive driver is the best one and no changes are made.

I’ve googled the issue and tried numerous suggestions (e.g., uninstalling all USB devices and allowing them to be redetected and reinstalled)… nothing I’ve been able to find has worked.

    Any suggestions?

I would check with Toshibato see if new USB controller drivers might be available. It is entirely possible these are not related, but who knows. Perhaps just installing the USB Controller will solve the problem.

I did try that and reinstalled the Toshiba drivers but it made no difference.

Again note that only the USB thumbnail drives are not working – all other USB functions are normal. I believe this has something to do with Acronis intercepting the drives and the uninstall script not returning them to normal behavior.

Does a thumb drive usually show up under disk drives linked to the disk.inf file for driver installation?

Do you have an image backup (using windows built in image backup option) from before you install Acronis? This would be the quickest way out of the problem.

You could also try a System Restore from before the failure. I would also prefer an Image. I have used Acronis TIH V 2010, 2011 and now 2013 (for Win 8 compatibility) I never used V 2012. I have always had great success with Acronis. I have had to restore my OS any number of times (dozens at least, I like to play with various things in my OS)

I also have removed Acronis without any problems. I haven’t a clue how Acronis could have caused this.
