Using True Image Home ver. 10. To date crossfingers I’ve not had any occasion where I’ve had to restore an image. My regular backups are complete system images stored on an external USB drive.
      1) What is the difference between creating a disk image and cloning a disk – or are they one and the same?
      2) Must either of these be restored to a disk of identical size as the original, or (in case of a complete disk failure) can they be restored to a larger replacement disk?

      Thanks Stuart

I have three hard disks- 40 gig c: drive, 160 gig d: drive for data, 160 gig removable drive with f: and g: partitions for system images and data backup. All sata, all NTFS. The removable drive is in a tray and has a switch, it is turned off except when needed for backups. There’s no option (that I know of) for “safe removal” as with a usb drive, I just wait until the drive activity light is off to switch it off, or switch it off after shutdown. I do use a flash drive occasionally, have it set for safe removal, and use the tray icon to remove.

That being said, one of my event errors is- Error, PlugPlayManager, Event 12, The device ‘SAMSUNG HD160JJ SCSI Disk Device’ (SCSIDisk&Ven_SAMSUNG&Prod_HD160JJ&Rev_WU105&28c68dfa&0&000) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal. (this is the removable disk drive)

This error seems to occur with the ftdisk error in my first post, and sometimes with a disk error, event 15, The device, DeviceHarddisk2D, is not ready for access yet. (or similar)

      Thanks, David

I’m getting the exact same warning on my son’s system (Dell 4600 XP Home fully patched and updated today) while I was preparing it for a full system image backup. But this is for the Temporary Internet folder (C:Documents and SettingsUser NameLocal Settings). I went into the folder after running DiskCleanup and got the warning, so I tried to manually delete all the favorite icons and cookies after running DiskCleanup again, but the Favorite Icons would not delete. shrug I didn’t have Dr. Delete on the system to get rid of them on a reboot, and really didn’t have the time to fool with it today. Now I think I’ll go back tomorrow and see what’s up. hmmn

Thanks for asking, it’s a bit of a sad tale.

They sent me a new motherboard, I installed it and the PC booted up and seemed fine. About 5 minutes later I had a blue screen – definitely different symptoms as it had previously been unable even to boot. I tried again and it hung after about 20 minutes. I tried to reinstall windows, in case the system image had been corrupted by the previous motherboard, and it reported errors reading the perfectly good Windows CD at various points, then hung again!

So now I have either another faulty motherboard, or a faulty CPU, or faulty memory. I tried putting the only memory stick in the other socket, but that didn’t help.

I have ordered another 1G PC3200 memory DIMM, on the grounds that additional memory never does any harm. I will then swap out the memory and if that is faulty I can return the original. That still leaves a CPU and motherboard, and I have no sensible way to distinguish which is now faulty – so keep your fingers crossed for me.

I think what you are experiencing has to do with these two programs loading completely before you begin using your system. I have a similar issue with my DSL service. When I boot the system, if I begin using the internet before two windows indicating that the DSL software has loaded appear, my connection to the internet often doesn’t work or will connect to the internet but not the ISP’s servers. If I allow these two windows to appear (thus indicating that the underlying software has finished loading) I have no problems. F-Secure is a firewall as well as an AV program and needs to load completely to work properly. GoBack is loaded before Windows and runs in a DOS environment to do it’s job, but it needs information from Windows before it can start (it creates a real-time system image so Windows has to load completely before Goback even starts to create it’s image). I’d suspect that with the addition of SP2 that your system is loading differently (read more slowly) and that it is just taking more time for F-Secure and GoBack to load. Give the system the 20 seconds it seems to need and you shouldn’t have any more trouble. The alternative is a time consuming process of checking what loads on startup and eliminating some unnecessary things until the system has enough resources to start F-Secure & GoBack more quickly.

edited by Doc to add….. BTW – System Restore from MS is not even in the same ballpark with GoBack. GoBack restores your ENTIRE hard drive to it’s previous state. System Restore returns ONLY your System Files to their previous state. All new data and revisions to data and non-system settings will be lost.

      Hey Dillon,

One of the nice things about msconfig is that if you don’t like the change, you can always go back in and recheck the item. smile I’d venture that it is safe to uncheck the reference to bluetooth in msconfig and the only consequence will be that it doesn’t load with Windows (which is what you want).

As for leaving the dongle attached to the back of the PC……… why not ?? I leave USB cables plugged in with nothing attached to them. They are for use with 2 external HDs that I do a weekly incremental backup to one and a monthly system image to the other. Both are stored in my safe and I leave the cables hanging until the next backup. Doesn’t seem to cause any problems that I’m aware of.

I’ve installed it on several PCs @work, @home, @friends, & @family. Have not had any problems yet. The two best reasons that I know of are 1.) the security enhancements and 2.) the hotifx rollup. You can start here: Learn About Windows XP Service Pack 2 for much more information. Just be sure to backup your data at a minimum. A full system image is an even better idea.

The problem with the MS backup program, each one that come with each OS will NOT work with another OS. One Can not even backup their system with this program and then install a new OS and then restore the backup.

I use my own method of back up by using the copy and/or xcopy commands and/or the drag and drop of Windows to different media. I do not rely on any third party for my data backups.

That said I do use Drive Image to burn a system image at different times.

I guess it depends on how many $$$$$’s you are talking about.
How at home with hardware are you? Would it be feasible to buy another HD and set up a mirror, physically disconnect the mirror HD when cloned, play around, then swap the HD’s over for an instant recovery?

I have a home network (2 PC’s) with which I had been practising networking etc, often with the more powerful machine with Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I wanted to be able to create images of my system which I could restore in the same way as for Home PC’s with Ghost or DriveImage. Unfortunately with Win 2000 Adv Server the copy of Ghost I have refers me to the Server version, which costs $$$$$’s.

Does anyone have a cheap solution, so I can build/rebuild and practice, without having to buy a product as if I had access to a corporate-size budget! My 2nd PC has a hard disk large enough to maybe store a couple of 4Gb boot partitions.

      THat’s interesting.

Was it a disk image, or a file system image?
I expect the latter would require a re-Axtivation.
