As a ‘learner’ I seek advice about Spybot. Is it a difficult product to use, can you quit the scan if unsure … questions like these.
I presently use Kaspersky Anti Virus, all the standard Vista HP Defender and Firewall stuff, SpywareBlaster and just recently CCleaner is ‘being learnt’.
The bottom line is that I don’t want some ‘testing software’ causing problems but I don’t want spystuff on my pc! Maybe these two wishes are incompatible opposites!

I regularly empty the Temp Files using the Vista Disc Clean-Up facility. However, now that I have used CCleaner (for cleaning the Reg) I thought that I would try it for cleaning some of the Windows aspects. I ran it for Temp Files only and found masses of them which I have now deleted.
My question is simple … why does the Microsoft Disc Clean-Up facility not get rid of these? Are they different ‘temps?’

Hello Doc. Some time ago I asked about some of the free registry cleaners that were available and was advised that they should be kept at arms length as they are said to of little proven benefits. I logged on to the link in your post & saw that Registry mechanic & RegCleaner are both available as freebies SO, seeing my computer is getting irksomely slow I wondered if you might feel that using one or both of the said cleaners would serve any benefit. Regards SF ps I use CCleaner periodically, is that enought?

I have on my system
CA Security Suite
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Plus (includes Ad-Watch)
I use CCleaner at least once per week
I use Acronis about every two weeks and copy (not move) the images to an external drive. (How insecure is that?)I am constantly bombarded with Microsoft’s “Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool” I have checked many times “Do not notify me again”
It still comes up, sooner or later I am going to make a mistake. Like one of the IE Toolbars embedded in software. Is “Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool” worth having with what protection I already have?

On my wife’s workstation running Win XP Pro SP3 she cannot view PDF files in either IE7 or Firefox. She says she could view them before she ran CCleaner.
When she clicks on a PDF file on a website (any/all) she gets a prompt saying something to the effect, “You cannot view PDF files in this browser with the version of Adobe Reader installed. You need either version 8 or 9”. Yes, that’s a poor rendition of the actual error.
So, she downloaded and installed the latest version of Adobe Reader with no change. I had her check in the “Preferences” to be sure that “Display PDF in browser” was enabled, which it was. IE is the default browser. I also went through IE’s “Security” settings to see if anything had been changed there but all looks fine.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?
THANKS!

Yesterday I used CCleaner to delete Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Recently Typed URLs, Index.dat files and Last Download Location and now when I click the Address box dropdown arrow, nothing shows. I’ve been using it the whole day so I was expecting by now to already have items in the dropdown list. What do I have to do to make the list reappear?

In a post 740,472 viking33 describes a problem with Java not running in his Vista Ultimate environment. The end solution was to uninstall all copies of Java and use regedit to clean out any remnants (I believe 9 were found). After the cleansing, and reinstalling the then current version of Java, all was well.
I’m having a similar situation in that Java will not run in my Vista Ultimate SP1 environment… but with a slight twist. Before I go the regedit route I thought I would post the problem to see if anyone else has experienced a like issue.
Yesterday, I went to our federal government’s web site to get some personal tax assessment information using IE7. The site reported that the Java applet was unable to load and gave some instruction on how to correct the problem. Essentially, I uninstalled all copies of Java, version 6 builds 2, 7 and 11 and then reinstalled build 11. Same problems. Uninstalled again, and ran Registry Mechanic and CCleaner’s registry tool to cleanse the files. No luck.
I even went to Java’s Verify Version Page which told me that Java was not installed… yet I knew it was.
Then, on a lark, I decided to install Firefox 3 to give it a whirl. I was able to then access my personal tax information on the government web site as well as being able to confirm via the Java Verify Version web page that all was well… using Firefox. But not using IE7.
Some might say it’s about time I switched to Firefox.
Well the switch has been made since it is the only browser of the two where Java will work in my environment.
I would still like to resolve the IE7 situation if anyone has any suggestions or like experience with the IE7 issue. I am prepared to go the regedit route but thought I would post to see if there are any like circumstances out there.
Cheers, Bob

When I sync my iPhone, it always rearranges my Favorites menu in Windows Explorer, so I deleted all of the favorites from my iPhone. Well, when I synced it, the iPhone or iTunes proceeded to delete all of the Favorites off my computer! Apple wasn’t any help, they said it shouldn’t do that. Yeah, I was pretty clear letting them know I agreed. Well, I was on the internet not long before I synced, and I can say with a lot of certainty, my Favorites were there. I again got back on the net not long after syncing, and they’re gone. Whatever. Can you tell I’m frustrated?
Is there any way to restore my Favorites menu in Windows XP? Last night I did my weekly / biweekly virus scan / Spybot cleaning / CCleaner. Would CCleaner wipe out any such restores?

Topic: CCleaner report
I have just run the CCleaner prog and it listed numerous programs that should be deleted BUT the list seems fishy as most all of them are currently in use so a little guidance is required regarding why the list was populated and what (if anything) I should do about it other than ignore it? The attachment shows only about half the list but I thought it would suffice to explain the point. Regards

Topic: Java installation errors
I had been getting this error for Java (Java Plug-in 1.4.2-15 is not installed properly) for quite a while so I decided to try to fix it. I removed all Java related apps using add/remove programs. I rebooted and downloaded the latest version of Java. While installing the new version I get the following error message. Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareJavaSoftJava Runtime Environment. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
That looked like a registry problem so I ran CCleaner to clean out registry errors it found. I still get the above error though.
I am at wits end as how to fix this problem. I would appreciate any help that can be offered. The Java site does not have live people to talk to, you must pay an expert.
Thanks,

I have run CCleaner within the last few days. Subsequently, when I launch MS Internet Explorer, Google is stubbornly my home page. Changing this in Tools > Options does not correct the situation; there appears to be a background program to re-establish Google as the Home page. Any assistance in regaining control of my machine will be greatly appreciated.
