    Not sure if this is a Windows 7 problem … might be Office 2010.

    I had a docx file in Word. I saved it as “web page, filtered”. It was given an HTM extension.

    In the folder where I saved it, it shows with a Word icon. I copied the file to another folder, and it shows with a different icon: the one that matches the icon assigned to that filetype. Screenshot attached.

    What is going on?

    How do I get this filetype to show the same icon everywhere.

      Oh … I wouldn’t worry about that.

      All it shows is two copies of the same file, with identical details, in 2 folders, with different icons. You can see the orange Firefox icon on the left and the blue Word icon on the right.

      If you really need a bigger picture, please reply back.

      Your icons can be changed as long as they have a .ICON extension.

      In the left image it seems to be associated with a network (\webmain) location that has different associations than those directly under the control of your local OS. Looks like its the Firefox icon for the domain location?
      What you could try is go to one of your local .htm files, right click on it and choose open with…choose default program and point it at Firefox. Ok it and refresh, the webmain link icons should stay the same and all your local ones should switch to Firefox ones so they match.

      Roderunner: That dialog box is for a shortcut, not for a file. Your suggestion does work for a shortcut, but not for the original file.Infinicore: Your suggestion does change the default program to open the file, but your suggestion that MS “should switch” the icon still does not happen with *.htm files created originally in Word.

      Just a thought: *.htm files created in a text editor do not suffer from this problem. Yet somehow Windows is keeping track that a *.htm file was created in Word, and keeping a Word icon on it even if I edit it with a different program or view it in a browser by default.

      I don’t know then, I created an htm in Word (2007) and saved it and it switched the icon right over to the default, which for me is Chrome.

        Weird. I just did this with Chrome, and for me the icon does not change.
