    Hi,

I was unable to get to a secure page on e-store site and, upon contacting the e-biz people, they suggested that I may need 128-bit encryption. My IE Help says it has 56-bit.

I followed the links to MS download site to download the 128-bit encryption pack IE501dom.exe. When I tried to run it (I figured it to be an install exe), it said I didn’t have the proper resources.

I then searched MS Knowledgebase for 128 encryption and came up with a bunch of gobbledygook/doublespeak about IEAK v5. I download it, installed it and tried to run it. I am still being thwarted because I apparently still don’t have everything I need. What is this? How difficult can they try to make this upgrade to 128-bit encryption?

Or am I being led down the proverbial garden path?

Could anyone explain in simple clear language what the steps are I need to take to taste some success? My life is slipping by in a hurry persuing all kinds of dead ends.

I don’t remember having any trouble upgrading IE 5.01 to 128bit encryption, but I also don’t remember having to install anything. The whole routine was automatic. Are you sure you selected the option to ‘Install from…’, and not ‘Save to Disc’? The instructions I had, clearly stated not to do the latter. The MS Update Windows route was the one I took. I think, though, if you upgrade to IE5.5 it is buit in, unless I’m very much mistaken.

        Hi Ken:

The file that I downloaded to upgrade 5.01 to 128 encryption is ie501dom.exe. What’s always puzzled me is there’s something that says it’s only available to “domestic” customers; i.e. those from the U.S.. Apparently, someone somewhere in the U.S. thinks that having 128 bit encryption will allow those outside the U.S. to commit subversive activity. In any event, I can’t get through to the Microsoft website now, but I think that’s the file you’re looking for.

        Hi MerC,

You’re absolutely right. The moment I read your post I remembered I also read that somewhere. I am usually very cautious with installing straight from the Net, so I promptly forgot (or dismissed?).

So, I followed your suggestion and it appears to have worked correctly now. (I just have to reboot yet to verify)
Anyway, I thank you and Phil for helping me out here.
