    We’ve just upgraded to Office 2007.

    In Word 2007 Styles pane, it doesnt display the current active heading style.

    In Word XP , working in a Word document if users click on a paragraph, the Styles pane would display the current active heading style.

    However in 2007 in the Styles pane, the current style although selected doesnt update the view in the Styles pane. users have to scroll in the Styles pane to see the current active style.
    The current active style doesnt display if users use:
    – shortcut keys
    – apply using the Style Group

    This isnt popular with the users and they would like this view available.

    Some people have got around this by; on their QAT toolbar adding the Styles drop down list. This updates to the current active heading style.

    We have company templates with heading styles. Some templates are configured with Manage Styles and the main heading styles used – Assigned Values…to display on top of the list. could this be effecting the current active style view?

    Note: Ive tested on Microsofts default template Normal.dotm. The same behaviour is occuring. If i’m using heading style “normal”. the Styles task pane doesnt display the current active heading style being “normal”.

    Is this a simple Word setting we can set?
    Is this a Microsoft “feature”?

    any ideas?

      Could the problem have to do with the Options settings? To check, click the link at the lower right side of the Style Pane to open the Style Pane Options dialog. Take a look at the “Select Styles to Show” drop-down; the choices include All Styles, Recommended, In Use, In Current Document. Next, look at the “Select how list is sorted” drop-down; the choices include Alphabetical, As Recommended, Font, Based on, and By type.

      When you find a combination that you like, click the “New documents based on this template” radio button and then click OK to save your settings. Note that you will have to check, and likely change, this setting, on everyone’s workstation. (You might also have to change the setting when you use documents based on a different template.)

      As you’ve noticed, W2007 does not show the current style at the top of the styles pane (as W2003 did). And if many styles are showing in the pane (or if it appears in a lower row of the styles gallery), you have to scroll to see it. I don’t know what they were thinking. One of the first things I did to customize W2007 was add Style (Style gallery classic) to my QAT—and that was before I ever touched managed styles.

      Oh, I see what you’re saying. Yes, like Pam, I’ve added the drop-down to the QAT as well. I’m not aware of any other workaround, though others might be.

      I agree this is a pain and don’t know of a quick way around it. However, in light of the number of toolbar customisations you used to run in Word 2003 then you should be developing a ribbon in Word 2007/2010 to get the same functionality in your template. This can easily include items such as the styles dropdown that others have placed in the QAT. If you position this new ribbon tab in front of the Home tab then it will be visible when people open the document.

      Putting up with the old template buttons rearranged in the Add-ins tab is not the best way to set up a template in Word 2007. There are some really nice toolbar features in the current versions of Word that can make a big improvement in the usability of your templates.

        Ideally, analyse should have been performed to setup a “QAT” template with favourites or most used functionality already setup on the QAT to deploy to users.

        Unfortunately due to time restrictions this wasnt performed and the default QAT was pushed out.

        Were in the process of deploying now & getting feedback about QAT favourites. If we deploy a QAT template now, it’ll override the users QAT, and the users wont be happy about that.

        I might look into adding the styles dropdown list into our custom add-in ribbon – great idea!

          You can deploy a corporate QAT in an add-on template that will reside in Word’s startup folder on each computer. This is probably the best solution because the users will be free to add to their normal.dotm QAT and to a document QAT, but they won’t be able to easily delete from or add to it. —They’d have to open the add-on template itself in order to modify its QAT and any macros it contains.

          If your users only have to use your custom tab (hard to believe), then putting the style dropdown on your custom tab should be fine. But I would consider using the QAT for functions whose availability at all times could be helpful. The styles dropdown — along with font, font size, and the show/hide button—is one of most viewed of the 30 or so items on my QATs.
