I updated Windows 10 with the 2023-10 cumulative updatem earlier today.  I just noticed that no app icons appear in the system tray area or on the taskbar.  When I go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Select which icons appear on the taskbar, no apps are listed.  Anybody else experiening this behavior?

    I’m on Windows 10 22H2, OS Build 19045.3570.

    Thanks…

      I’m on Windows 10 22H2, OS Build 19045.3570.

Same here, but my system tray and everything else it fine.

If you have not restarted your computer since it’s first boot into the current build after completing the update, I’d suggest a simple manual restart before doing anything else.  That might be all it takes.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’ve already done a couple of updates and run sfc /scannow with no joy…

UPDATED AND REVISED:  I updated Windows 10 with the 2023-10 cumulative update. Since that update, no app icons appear in the system tray area or on the taskbar.

When I go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Turn system icons on or off, ALL of the buttons are greyed out (except for Clock).

      Anybody else experiening this behavior?

I’ve tried clearning the icon cache and several other suggested fixes, to no avail.

Are you running any Menu tweakers (Open Shell, Stardock apps, etc) or Windows Tweakers (Windows Blinds, Aero Tewaker, O&O software, etc)? If so, try turning them off or updating them. Microsoft’s changes to Windows can cause problems for older versions or until the vendor’s updates catch up after the changes.

I’m using no menu tweakers or Windows tweakers.   The problem is the same on my wife’s laptop and my desktop PC.

On my desktop PC, I tried to do a system restore back to before the Windows update, to no avail.

What antivirus are you using?  Is there any thing else not “stock windows” installed on these machines?

I’m using the standard Windows Defender – no other AV programs.

As for anything else not “stock” windows, I can’t think of anything much.  I use 0patch software on both machines and have for a couple of years with no evident issues.

Okay, as of today, Win10 update has wiped all my auto-start programs, except Adobe Updater, and there’s no programs showing on my taskbar at all, no matter what Taskbar settings i select

      microsoft is some janky sheet

Since I cannot repro this nor am I seeing it widespread, do you have

        1. McAfee a/v
        2. some sort of third party file explorer or smart menu customization?

If either one or two I would uninstall, see if it clears up, and then ensure you have the latest versions of either one.

okay, this is weird – after about forty minutes of using various programs, now all the programs are showing up on the taskbar, as usual, along with all pinned programs and TSRs

an update enigma, to be sure.

UPDATE:  I found a fix through a brute-force search in the Registry for the word “tray.”  I came across the following:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoTrayItemsDisplay

It was set to 1, so I set it to 0 and rebooted.  These were the results:

      • The system tray (“notification area”) icons reappeared.
      • Under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Select which icons appear on the taskbar, the list is no longer blank; the full list of icons reappeared.
      • Under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Turn system icons on or off, all of the icons that were greyed out (everything except Clock) are active again.

I hope this helps anyone else who comes up against this problem.

A wrinkle (and a pointer to a Group Policy setting I hadn’t thought to look for), in case anyone is continuing to follow this:  https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/lost-icons-in-notification-area-windows-10/#post-2606952
