I know that unchecking “Enable third-party browser extensions” (Tools–Internet Options–Advanced) will help prevent some spyware from working its way into my system, but what other effects or possible limitations will unchecking that box have?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 7, 2003 at 4:54 pm #643156Greetings DenGar,
As far as I can tell, not many. I personally use the Google Toolbar, I find it very helpful in my endeavors to find things online, and disabling that option prevents that from loading. There are other ways of ensuring you’re not afflicted with spyware en-masse, (adaware comes to mind). I’m sure there are TONS of third-party add-ons for I.E., skin utilities, etc. It’s all a matter of preference really.
HTH,

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 7, 2003 at 9:55 pm #643210I recently found a site that let’s you check whether a potential download is spyware or adware. Unfortunately I can’t claim the glory since (after a search) I found someone here had beat me to it – see Is your Download safe?.
If you’re keen, you can also add DNSKong to your armoury. see Internet FIltering at the system level. I installed it to block ads, but it has cut down on spyware intrusions too.
