    Woody says (among lots of other good things)

    VLC media player: Windows Media Player has its strong points, but it doesn’t play many kinds of media files. It also won’t work with iPods (and I refuse to struggle with iTunes). VLC media player handles every type of file I’ve ever thrown at it — and it connects to iPods, iPhones, and iPads, too.

    Does VLC media player really connect to iPods? I can’t see the feature.

      I use Nitro PDF Reader which is a speed demon and can also create .pdf files. It’s worth a look.

      I’d also suggest Ninite – go to ninite.com This is a great free program that makes it easy to load programs like Firefox, Foxit, Adobe, Recuva and other valuable programs.

        Woody’s suggested using Dropbbox for back ups, however, I prefer using Sugarsync. Its one big benefit is that it does not require to move a file to a specific folder. Sugarsync automatically backs up any file in your My Documents folder. It takes the whole memory to move it to the folder bit out of the equation.

      Great advice, Woody. You mentioned your ambivalence about Foxit; I had used that product for a while, and yes, it’s faster than Acrobat Reader, but as you say, it really tries to load you up with “stuff”. I switched to Tracker’s free pdf reader and haven’t looked back – http://www.tracker-software.com/product/downloads

      Also, I really miss Apple’s ability to print a pdf directly, so I’ve been using Cute PDF, also free and it works very well – http://www.cutepdf.com/

      Finally, while I am truly appreciative of the VLC media player, for just playing my music collection, that old standby Winamp is still my favorite – small, easy to manipulate, and of course, free. Just bypass the “bundle” at the top of their download page – http://www.winamp.com/media-player/en – and pick up the “lite” version near the bottom of the page. That reduces the download from 11-33 mb to 3.5 mb – and leaves out a lot of the junk.

      I have found that the Tracker PDF-XChange viewer is best for me as well. I can set it up as the default viewer for browsers andd opening PDF files on my PC. I also purchased the the upgraded license which allowed a free download of PDF-Xchange 4 Lite which allows me to modify and create pdf files.

      I have also used the CutePDF app in the past to convert a word document to a pdf file. Worked veru nicely.
