    Hey Y’all,

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…

I was poking around in the Registry on my 2 Win10 Pro 1909 – 18363.836 desktop computers looking for some settings and I came across this:

On my main desktop (DellXPS8920 Purchased in 2017)
    ExplorerPolicyXPS8920

On my test desktop (DellXPS8700 Purchased in 2013)
    ExplorerPolicyXPS8700
So why would one have more entries under this key than the other, a lot more!
The only difference I can be sure of is that the 8700 has been upgraded from Win7 to Win 8.0 to Win 8.1 Pro to Win 10 Pro. Whereas the 8920 was purchased with Win 10 Pro installed.

    Ideas anyone? 😎

My custom built desktop PC came originally with Windows 7, subsequently “upgraded” to Windows 10, but never had Windows 8 or 8.1.  In that registry key I have 18 entries, mostly the same but some are different.  I can only assume that they are leftovers from the earlier version(s), but have no relevance or are not required in Windows 10, hence not present in the “new” machine.  If that’s the case, would such redundant entries be picked up and deleted by a so-called “registry cleaner”?  (I am NOT about to find out ….)

If you are “cleaning” with CCleaner it doesn’t automatically delete found entries, you have to tell it to delete them. So, to answer your question, take a peek and find out.

CC asks you if you want to back up any deletions – just in case.

CCleaner Registry will scan for missing or unused items, e.g.  “Missing Shared DLL”, “Unused File Extension”, “Obsolete software key”, etc.  I don’t believe it scans for items which are simply redundant but have no relationship to anything else.  Could be wrong though.

Just checked out my DellXPS137000 (laptop 2015) With the same OS version as the other two.

It came with Win 8.0 Home upgraded to 8.1 Home, 10 Home, to PRO on 4/17/20.

My current one, purchased in 2016 with Win 10 Pro (built for me by a local PC tech), just has default. My older one,  ~2010 with Win 7, upgraded through 8, 8.1 and 10, has just the nodrivetypeautorun. I have a Win 10 home laptop purchased last year – when I wake up fully I’ll see what that has.

Having just woken up (twice) my laptop doesn’t have that entry, just like RG’s in #2269720

Just for curiosity’s sake, I looked at one of my two Windows 7 machines just now and the registry key looks identical to your main desktop (the Dell XPS8920) except that the key’s DWORD value is 145, which matches the value of your test desktop (the Dell XPS8700). I wonder if this particular value indicates an SSD made by Intel being in the system, or perhaps just a single SSD in the system instead of an SSD along with an HDD?

I’ll check my other Windows 7 machine to see if it matches up, or whatever else it might have in a little while.

Both of my machines are Windows 7 x64 SP1 machines, one  bought in 2010 with a spinner from Western Digital, the other one bought in 2012 with an SSD from Intel.

I expect to have both machines replaced with completely new Windows 10 machines within the next couple of months. Both new machines will have 1909 on them, as I don’t believe 2004 is stable enough even for a new machine just yet. But that’s a story for another thread.

Ok, so throw both my theories about the value of the NoDriveTypeAutoRun right out the window! 🙁 (insert “embarrassed” emoji/smiley here)

I just reviewed your computer specs using the link in your signature, and neither theory is supported, as both of your computers have multiple SSD’s in them from a single manufacturer which isn’t Intel.

As promised, here’s the info from my other Windows 7 machine: The aforementioned registry key is identical to the other machine I reported on this morning, right down to the values contained in the key’s DWORD entry.

So much for the theory that your laundry list of entries in that particular key were holdovers from the machine’s days with Windows 7 installed. Maybe.

Did you ever change any preferences that might be related to the “settings” shown in that particular key on your daily driver at one point or another in the distant past and then revert them to some sort of “factory default”? That could explain their presence, even with a seemingly innocent data entry of 0 (zero) that many of them have.

Since your daily driver and @Bundaburra ‘s original machine were both Windows 7 machines, could it be that both of you had a software package pre-installed on the machine from the manufacturer that you subsequently deleted as part of decrapifying it after having received it from the manufacturer? The settings you both share could be leftovers from that software package.

I have never done anything at all on either of my machines anywhere nearly related to any of the puzzling “settings” you show under that key on your daily driver, hence the complete absence of them on my machines, possibly.

        Just a thought.

Things that make you go Hmmm….

Hello, RG! Good to see you! I’m Lou Sander, formerly on a previous version of this site. You and a few others gave me invaluable help with an Excel workbook I use with the Powerball and Mega Millions lotteries. Our lottery pool is still going strong, and (of course) we’re still waiting for that elusive big payday. If it comes, we’ll buy you a TV or something. 😉
