I may be doing something all wrong, but:

I have Win_7 installed on it’s own drive. If I back it up (with True Image 11), a restore won’t boot properly — says it’s damaged and I need my Windows DVD.

But if I back up the entire DISK (not just “C but the Disk 0), then it seems that the resotore works — at least it did when I tried it.

Is that what I need to do alwys with Win 7 now? If so, why? I,m posting to the Acronis (TI) board as well, in case I am missing something in the setup.

      Is TI compatible with Win7?

      Chuck,
TI Ver 11 and even the latest TI 2009 have not yet been verified for use on Win 7. You seem to forget ( Win 7 ) that this is STILL a Beta even with the RC version.
Acronis has not published anything about Win 7 use, although in Wilders Forum, there are SOME reports of it working. Wait until Acronis comes out with the updatedupgrade.

        Bob:

I went directly through Acronis support early on, since TI is all I use and with no backup, well… Anyway, they told me that as long as my backups were done from the rescue disk, all would be fine.

That has proven to be the case, except with the dating of the backups. I thought I could be going nuts — no comments from the peanut gallery! — so I specifically did a backup last night, at about 11pm, just to verify.

That backup shows in explorer as yesterday at about 6pm. The folder is right, the backup is wrong.

What the heck could cause such a thing?

What the heck do you mean by the folder is right but the backup is wrong?

Do you mean the date on the folder is correct but the contents are not?

Do you mean it did not backup at all?

All these would seem to be better asked of Acronis.

Joe, I’m not certain I directly answered this question:

The folder dates are correct, probably because I set up the folders in Explorer. It’s the Acronis files, created during the backup, that are picking dates from God only knows where. The Acronis board has comments about backups being an hour off — but I’m talking sometime a couple *days*!

But yes, the backup itself seems totally complete.

And I have posted to Acronis’ board as well, I just know that some of the members here have used Acronis’ True Image, and I though perhaps some user feedback (non-Acronis-staff) would shed some light.

Are the backups run from within Windows or from an Acronis boot disk?

Are the backups stored locally or on a network?

Is WIN 7 the only OS you have working now and is it on your primary machine?

If so, MS states VERY clearly that this should not be the case. Either dual boot or use it on a spare machine.

If not, why sweat a back up or image of a Beta or RC version of the OS?

I have Win 7 as a part of a triple boot setup. I have only loaded a few apps on it in order to try it out and get some experience with it. ALL of my important programs are still on the XP partition and THOSE I image regularly. Vista is somewhere in the middle and I have some dups of some of my apps running on it. I DO image them also.

WIN 7? Don’t bother at all imaging or backing up as yet.

Like Stuart, I too am confused by this thread. You said in the first post that you have Win 7 installed on its own drive. Is that the only OS you run? Is it your “main” computer? Do you have another computer?

I agree with everyone who keeps reminding you that this is NOT a “Gold” product yet and you can’t expect performance from peripheral software that has not been written for Win 7. Bob is right – you should wait, wait, wait.

Meanwhile, like Bob, I too have Win 7 on its own drive, in a triple boot environment. Windows XP is still my “main squeeze” and I have Shadow Protect installed thereon. So, just because it’s easy to do so, I run a weekly (and daily incremental) of XP, Vista and Win 7. But I do it from software installed on XP.

My strategy in even touching Win 7 is to see what it looks like, as Batcher said somewhere – to see where they’ve hidden stuff I used to know how to do, get a preliminary feel for all my hardware to see if it functions yet. If it doesn’t, I cool it until it does. Lookin’ around and playing is the net of it. Isn’t that what you do too?

Well guys, now I know I’m gonna catch it from somebody, ’cause yes, I AM using Win_7 most always. It’s nothing “mission critical”, and I do make copies daily — (copy a:*.* b:), and certainly caution and skepticism are good things, but at the same time, the nature of Beta is to try (test) right?

…and it’s not like I’m not getting backups, and I DO save notes with each, so I know waht they are, regardless of what they SAY they are…

But I have (very often found that what different software people say ends up being not quite the case, which is why I always check back here.

And, as a side note, I in fact am finding a lot fewer issues with Win_7 beta than I did/do with Vista “Gold”.

It just seems quite odd that thi issue with file dates and times wold be there.

So what you are saying is that you only use Win7 just to play Solitaire? What does “most always” mean? Pretty risky, putting all of your eggs in one basket, if Win7 is your primary OS, Chuck.

And the reason the RC no longer has the “Feedback” option as the Beta did, is you are no longer testing a Beta, MS is doing it for us, in the RC version.

I’m just in the throes of buying a recycled Sony Vaio laptop (Pentium dual core, max 2 GB of memory) to use for gaining familiarity with Windows 7, which will be the successor to XP Pro at work (if we can ever afford to replace up-to-5-year-old PCs).
This laptop will run Windows 7 RC as the only operating system – (But since it will come initially with Vista Home Premium installed, I don’t regard this as a great loss! )

              BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

On XP Pro? I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve tried Windows 7 for about 10 months!
(If you mean Vista, I’ve almost successfully managed to avoid it. It’s just that some stupid/misguided users sometimes need their recent PCs/laptops sorted out.)

No, probably not over XP Pro, but it always seems that the developers push the boudaries so that we are forced to “upgrade” eventually, and 7 is certainly better than any Visat I tried, if only from a stability and response standpoint.

Bob, I thik it’s kinda cool that MS gathers their own info. I suppose that if you’re paranoid it could be troublesome. But then, if you are TRULY paranoid, you’d be thinking that they could get into your system anyway, since they develop the stuff that makes it all run, wouldn’t ya think?

And as far as using Win 7 as my promary O/S, I suppose that in a perfect world I would be concerned as you suggest. But again Bob, I’ve had “gold” systems crash on me, I’ve had hardware fail and cost me hours, and I even ha a machine years ago that was doing an install quirk that MS swore xoudln’t happen. So yeah, I suppose it’sa bit risky, but then, you only live once, dontcha?

I’ve been known to play Solitaire from time to time. But in fact my correspondence is worth more to me than any one project — which as I mentionewd get backed up daily, which is probably a greta deal more than the average user.

And yes, the tickle of trying the new toy is worth something to me I suppose. And, as mentioned, since it’s been a good deal more responsive (for me) than Vista, which came unrequested on my machine when I bought it, I can at least re-install and switch things if need be now. Overall, it seems to work.

I am a bit confused by this thread. If Acronis True Image doesn’t support Windows 7 yet then why bother testing it. Just wait till they produce a Windows 7 compatible version before doing those tests.

I assume you’re not trying to use Windows 7 to do any production work yet, as it is still not released software and is not suitable for that, so why try to do backups?
