I went back to a backup for my windows 11.  I was having issues with updates, so I went to start over.

Now it’s telling me that my system isn’t properly activated.  I never had to activate “11” since it was/is an upgrade from a registered “10”, so I have no “code”.

    How do I fix this?

Is this happening on the rented laptop you say you were given a week ago or so?

A rented laptop that came with W11? If so and are you attempting to restore your image data to the laptop, it is likely to confuse Windows licensing because your image is registered to your hardware and the current hardware already has a license in the BIOS.

      Ah, thanks Paul.

So is there a way to fix this?

I have no idea, not ever been in that situation.
Can you survive until yours returns?

Will the rented laptop restore to the factory image?  Settings / recovery

Since the laptop is rented, wouldn’t that best be a task for the owner/owning company’s representative(s) to do rather than the person renting the laptop? After all, most of the time, they come with an OS preinstalled and already licensed to the owner/owning company.

Yes, but if I understand correctly, He restored an image of his “being repaired computer “ onto the rented computer and now that computer says it is not properly activated.

And that scenario is addressed by @Paul-T ‘s reply above, I believe.

Basically, it doesn’t sound like he should’ve done that.

I agree he should not have done that.

Should have just done an over the top install from an iso.

@PL1, what has been described by the OP (Chuck) has been taking place on a rented laptop, see this post and Chuck’s reply right below it.

At this point, I’m guessing that’s very possibly what the outfit that owns the laptop is going to have to do when they get it back.  🙂

I’m sure rental firms reimage on return. 10 minute job saves hours of hassle.
