I have just tried to download a program into my program files folder, but got the message that I could not do this because I did not have administrator’s permission. More BS. So how do I change this so that I can download the program to the folder?

I also have yet another problem with my IE. My new computer came with Windows 7 preinstalled. I do not have a copy of the Windows software. My system also uses IE8, I think, which is being increasingly rejected by a lot of web sites. A couple of days ago I tried to upgrade my IE8 to IE11. My first attempt failed because I was given the message that I had to have Service Pack 1, I think. Well I downloaded the service pack in question, but all attempts at downloading any version of IE still fails. I don’t wan’t to change to any other type of browser. My machine is a 64-bit. Can somebody please tell me how I can get a higher version than IE8 installed?

You should never download anything to your Program Files folder, that is reserved for installed programs.
Download the files to a temporary folder, scan them with your virus scanner, unblock them (right click > Properties > Unblock), then copy them to the required location using Windows Explorer.

Go to Control Panel/Windows Update

Newer versions of IE can be installed via Windows Update.

That is a serious problem.

Did Service Pack 1 install successfully? You can check this by going to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsSystem. In the upper “Windows edition” section it should say “Service pack 1” if the service pack installed successfully.

If “Service Pack 1” installed successfully but Windows Update does not work then you need to repair Windows Update. There are various technical methods you could use to repair WU, but I have found Windows Repair (All In One) very effective. But be careful to follow the advice/instructions in the program.

Once you have run “Windows Repair” go back into WU and “Check for updates” (the check might take ten minutes or more, so you need to be patient).

In my experience it is best to upgrade from IE8 to IE10 first, then install any WU patches for IE10, then upgrade to IE11. If you skip IE10 expect problems with IE11.

Let me add my 2-cents, one thing at a time. First, downloads: I created a folder in c-drive called “Downloads” [yeah, really used my imagination, huh? 🙂 ]. I “told” all my antivirus/antimalware not to automatically scan Downloads. ‘Cause some downloads generate false positives. I manually scan the files later; since all downloads [ZIPs, EXEs, MSIs] are “moved” to my d-drive aAPPS directory, such are scanned on-the-fly and/or later during scheduled scans. Do not download into or “move” out of Program Files, Program Files x86, or Program Data directories. Leave ’em be. 🙂

IE upgrading – I’ll defer to others here, for now, I’m still learning about IE.

MS seems to have withdrawn it’s Update Component Fixit, so see if the on board one will work.

Go Start – Control Panel – System and Security/Find and fix problems – System and Security/Fix problems with Windows Update.

While it’s been a while since I’ve used IE8, I think this will still be the same procedure – in IE – Tools – View downloads then click on Options in the lower left and click on Browse.

To change the location to Desktop for the batch files in the tutorial, click on Desktop then on Select Folder then on the OKs to close those windows off.

It could be worth resetting IE to defaults before attempting an IE11 upgrade/update.

When you’ve run the batch files you can change the downloads location back to the (usually) default Downloads folder.

I was wondering about the SP1 install and if the correct one had been installed, but I think if the install had failed there would have been a corresponding error message.

It must be an oldish Win 7 machine if it didn’t come with SP1 preinstalled ?
