Adobe Flash Player Popup

Recently I keep getting a popup on almost every site I visit saying the site would like me to install Adobe Flash Player, although I have the latest version installed. I have popups blocked. Googling the title gets two threads from YAHOO Answers from 2008 & 2009 asking if it’s some kind of virus, with no conclusive solution profered. Virus and malware scans show nothing.

The machine is running XP-pro SP3 & newly installed IE8. I’m completely baffled.

No, they are that popup bar that appears just below the bars at the top of the page. Clicking on the X Box closes it, but only momentarily. Clicking on the bar itself gives you the standard Microsoft popup warning about add-ons, etc. One of the solutions mentioned in the YAHOO ANSWERS threads I mentioned said to uninstall my version of the Flash Player and reinstall a new version, which I did, altho it had the exact same version number, so it’s not an update they want to install. This re-insatallation of the Flash Player had no effect and the popups continue to appear. I get all the graphics and videos on the sites without any problems so I don’t know what the purpose of the suggested download could be. Maybe I’m being too suspicious and I should just go ahead and agree to the download and maybe it will overwrite the Flash Player I have on my harddrive and everything will work out and the popup will cease?

To “research” this “situation”, I have read through your 2 previous
threads, including the One about “0-day Adobe ( Reader )” .
There is little known Info in them to assist me in possibly helping you .
I will start by saying under no circumstances should you “agree” to
the “download” ; when you hover your mouse over the Link ( there is
a “link” !? ), what “address” does your “Status Bar” tell you is the
“true” destination ? I suspect you have some malware on your
computer !

I would NEVER have the continually malware-prone Adobe Reader on
my computer ; I uninstalled it at least a couple of yrs ago and got the
SAFER & FREE “Foxit Reader” from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/reader3.php .

Because of security Concerns, I do not have Adobe Flash Player,
though I realize many consider it to be indispensable .

Since you probably have malware ( I NEVER rely on anything from
“Yahoo Answers ” ), this is where the programs you said you would
look into come into play . I would strongly encourage you, IF you have
NOT already done so, to get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
( http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php ) AND “SUPERAntiSpyware”
( http://www.superantispyware.com ) , BOTH of which come in FREE
Version(s) and after updating them, run their most “complete”
Scan .

Thanks for the advice, Robin. I did do virus and malware scans, as I stated in one of my posts, with clean results. I was eventually informed that Adobe was, for some unknown reason, not recognizing the Flash Player on my system, although it was working in all other respects. The first time I reinstalled it was, to be safe, directly from the Adobe site. I was told to reinstall it from the popup bar — which WAS sent from the authentic Adobe site — and all’s now well. So my speculation in my 2nd post about doing just that turned out to be correct — although I checked with someone more knowledgeable first before going ahead. And I think it was you, Robin, who suggested in the past that I download Malwarebytes, etc. so I did have them on hand. So thanks for that too.
