Adobe Reader 9.2 update available for XP SP2/SP3, a 43.5 MB download if you avoid the 0.8 MB “Free McAfee Security Scan (optional)”.

There’s still no way to exclude “Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR”, and these components have to be uninstalled after Acrobat Reader is installed, if you don’t want them.

There’s still no way to exclude “Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR”, and these components have to be uninstalled after Acrobat Reader is installed, if you don’t want them.

I just updated to the 9.2 version (from within Reader 9.1) and there is no sign of Acrobat.com or Adobe AIR following the update.

I think it only intalls these when you install the software, not when you do an update.

I just updated Acrobat Pro to 9.2.0 and it didn’t reinstall Adobe Air or Acrobat.com

Could you please elaborate a little more about “Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR”? Or perhaps someone else who has done a clean install (with the latest version).

Because apparently it isn’t present in every (language) version as far as I can see, even if doing a clean install. If I remember correct I did see some of this AIR & Acrobat.com thingies some year ago with AR 8. From version 9, which was a clean install, I have only done updates till including version 9.1.3. But the other day I installed AR 9.2 by first removing, rebooting and doing some small cleaning. The only thing that I find in C:ProgramAdobeReader 9.0ReaderAIR is the Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape (same as in C:ProgramAdobeReader 9.0ReaderBrowser; redundancy 2.0? Ah yes, the plug-in is also in the browsers’ plugins folders, just to be sure.).

Or all that is a result of me uninstalling some AIR thing months ago and forgetting about it and a clean install now did not change that; since I can’t find any separate entries in “Add or remove…” in the CP.

As far as I have looked now, apart from security updates, this version, 9.2, adds “Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager” (adobearm.exe) to the start-up items in the HKLM run key.

BTW: the Swedish version of AR 9.2 is 26.7 MB in size (sans McAfee Security Scan). Woo-hoo! (Most of the time elsewhere we get bigger files.) Hmm, apparently for most languages the files are in the region of 26-27 MB; the only difference I see is between EXE and MSI files, the former being around 25-27 MB and the latter being some 43-45 MB in size. It seems like Adobe has removed this AIR etc. altogether from the AR package. It can’t be that it is only included in the MSI file.

P.S. “C:Program” is the location for the %ProgramFiles% variable in the Swedish version of Windows.

If I ever have to do a complete install (rather than an update) of a new version of Adobe Reader, I look in two places after I’ve done it:

a) in Control Panel -> “Add or Remove Programs”, and uninstall Abobe Air and Acrobat.com – I’ve no idea what they are, only that I don’t need them

in the Startup Lists (e.g. from MSCONFIG, or Autoruns, or whatever), I look for anything in the HKLM Run key (usually) saying Adobe, such as the Scheduler and the Speed Launcher, and now Adobe ARM* (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager) which is yet another piece of software to check on whether the product needs an update. Like JAVA, and Google Toolbar…

*confusingly Adobe ARM is also some software for the ARM range of chips, in mobile phones and so on…

Hmm, I remembered wrong about the Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR and all that, it was included in ver. 9, June 2008. Tempus fugit. Acrobat.com was a beta at the time, then it became, eh? Anyhow thanks, those are the places I would look at, and it seems like it is removed from the package.

In this thread ([post=”798210″]Post 798210[/post]) I was fooling around with both Adobe and Foxit for other reasons. But in the course of that adventure, I used Revo Uninstaller to completely remove Adobe Reader and then re-installed it from the downloaded, as a new install.

As a result neither Acrobat.Com nor Adobe Air are anywhere to be found on my system – Task Manager (running), Revo Uninstaller (installed) AND a hard drive search for both files.

However, that’s a “tiny bit” of an untruth because there is a copy of Acrobat.Com in a Flash Player folder that may have been there for awhile – I know not. I think I’ll check that out. But, at any rate, it kinda looks like Adobe have changed the Reader download package.

Edited To Add: Aha says I, I understand now! The above mentioned Acrobat.Com is a FOLDER in the Flash Player folder of my XP user profile. In that folder is one file that has nothing to do with Adobe Reader. It’s a file that got put there recently when I installed an Adobe web conferencing software package. As a result, I know it’s an “OK” file to be living on my drive.
